I recently read an interesting thread about HCPs (highly sensitive persons) which provoked some extremely strong negative reactions - ie it isn’t a thing. I’m over 60 and grew up in a very dysfunctional family. My parents just didn’t cope well with life. There was a lot of talk about how we were highly sensitive and also a rather unpleasant undercurrent of others being inferior, coarser beings. I think that was entirely defensive because we were all quite socially accepted in the outside world.
My younger daughter was diagnosed with autism a few years ago and when I read the symptoms I had a real lightbulb moment. I think the extreme sensitivity that everyone in my family of origin experienced may have been neurodivergence and that we would maybe have had help 40/50 years ago.
Does anyone agree? I don’t have a specific problem but have reached an age when I want to understand and forgive.
Thank you!
