Fluoxetine Prescription; Is This Normal?

I received a prescription for fluoxetine today from the GP. Never tried fluoxetine but have had other anti-depressants years ago.

The thing I'm finding odd is the GP just gave them out like they were smarties? She didn't ask me any questions, check my previous history, do any physical checks such as blood pressure. She didn't even explain any of it to me; side effects, what to expect, the best time to take them.

Is that normal? I feel slightly anxious to start them as it felt so slap dash, get me out the door. Do I ask to speak to a different doctor before starting them?

I'd ask for a telephone appointment and ask your questions, before you start the medication

I think it’s fairly ‘normal’ for GP’s to not have time to explain side effects etc.. as in our practice they have literally 12mins per patient and the side effects are always listed in the leaflet inside, or online. However, when you first start these types of medication, they can make you feel absolutely dreadful for the first couple of weeks or so (ie worse), then once you get through that you are usually able to feel a bit better. I’ve been on many different types and some gave me what I’d describe as ‘brain zaps’. The ones I’m on at present give me random body jerks when I’m falling asleep, but are very effective at controlling my emotions.
I do think they are over prescribed as I’d say most of my friends have been on them at some point, and all for different reasons. I hope you feel better soon.
