Counselling/Talking therapy for anxiety and OCD - in London

Hi all

One of my closest friends has a daughter aged 25, who lives in London. Battersea area.

The daughter suffers with anxiety and OCD/intrusive thoughts and her mother, my friend, has offered to pay for Counselling or some sort of appropriate therapy.

Trouble is.....my friend would like to find the Therapist by word of mouth and recommendations. But neither my friend nor I live in London

Any recommendations from MNetters? 🥰

Counsellors need to be BACP registered

I advise Start with NHS Talk Therapy can make a self referral

Whats the trigger for the anxiety ? Has there been an event? Start with talk therapy see how that progresses if she can tolerate it. There needs to be a readiness as therapy requires work and can initially feel a bit triggering (that’s natural and temporary)

Good Nutrition and mindfulness apps can support the therapy too. Gentle exercise (a walk outside) will complement the talk therapy too

Finally consider see GP for a review

If they are open to seeing a private gp then I can highly recommend one in South Kensington .
she has literally saved my dd’s life from anxiety and other issues.
She will help and connect you with other help as needed.
Message if you want the details

I have OCD, talking therapy is not always recommended. It can reinforce the beliefs. I self
referred through nhs talk therapies and was given a block of high intensity CBT. CBT and ERP are more recommended for ocd

Talk therapy is the global name of the NHS service. Alll therapy is talk therapy after all. Within talk therapy there is CBT, skilled therapist will know which approach to use

I know… I referenced NHS talk therapies in my
own post. I used the service and went through triage to access CBT. My point was that just sitting with a counsellor and talking about the cause of anxiety isn’t helpful for people with OCD.

Thanks so much! Some great advice. I had NO idea that Counselling or talking therapy is not a good idea for those with OCD/intrusive thoughts.

So.....CBT is suggested? I have a feeling (although I might be wrong) that the child has already tried CBT

I dont know what ERP is, but I will pass all suggestions on

@blizymitzy I'd be very interested in having the details of the private GP 🥰

Any further advice or suggestions gratefully received.

CBT is talking therapy but different from counselling.
