Late onset psychosis help needed.

Hello, does anyone have any experience of late onset psychosis? My lovely best friend has become very ill with paranoid thoughts, she can barely talk and cannot really function day to day. This has all happened very recently and the doctors seem at a loss as to why this is happening. Has anyone else experienced this in their mid forties?

Sorry can’t help but, drugs, alcohol, medications? Hormones?

There are online MH charities who can also offer tailored advice if you google

Drs have hopefully referred your friend for assessment

Menopause?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 20/08/2025 21:48

Often it's underlying things (e.g. autism, adhd) and brought on by trauma or stress or burn-out. Mid-forties means it could also be peri menopause.

I have a friend who had anti-nmda receptor encephalitis that looked a lot like psychosis also.

Really sorry to hear this. I’m not sure it’s that unusual for there to be no obvious trigger for psychosis though? The most important things are to make sure she’s taking the meds - and obviously to keep her safe.
