Mirtazapine experiences?

Hi all,

I have posted on here before about my struggles with postnatal depression and insomnia. Doctors have prescribed 15mg mirtazapine, which I took last night and it really knocked me out, found it really difficult to get up this morning and have felt really groggy all day.

does anyone have any experience of this drug and do the side effects improve? I have a young baby so I obviously need to be functional to look after her. Even sitting on the sofa with her now, I feel like I’m floating? Is this normal?

I struggle really bad with my sleep (have done for years since before having a baby) so this is why doctors have prescribed it for me. I understand 30mg is slightly less sedating so their plan is to get me onto that after taking 15mg for a week. I know it can increase appetite but I’m barely eating at the moment so I’m not too concerned about that.

I’m keen to hear anyone’s experiences and if it works for them :)

I’m really sorry but I had to stop it. Like you, it knocked me out and I was needing to sleep in the day too. I also put on three stone.

Hi op, I took it for about two months earlier this year. The sedative affect seemed to wear off after a few weeks. It helped me mentally but I put weight on so I came back off it. The great thing about it is how quickly it works so I will use it again in future if I have a mental health struggle. Hope it helps you

Hi I am on Mirtazapine 45mg, the first 2 weeks did make me very drowsy but then that lifted, they help me sleep well but not doing much for mood yet. Thinking of you

I’ve just started taking 7.5 mgs at night to help with tinnitus distress.
3 nights in its helping with sleep but very drowsy all morning still.

30mg is less sedating than 15mg, so it's the lower doses that knock you out usually. I've found it good however in like 6 months I've put on two stone. I need to come off it but I'm aware it needs a slow taper so not looking forward to that but also don't want to keep piling on this weight. I will say it got me out of a really rough patch so I haven't regretted going on it.

I had to come off it, it made me sleep 12 hours a night which was fine for a week but got too much in the end.

Yes the lower dose is more sedative than higher. You may find that your body gets used to it fairly quickly. It is often used for anxiety, sleep problems and eating disorders (it can interfere with your feeling of fullness after food so you need to be mindful of that). I would stay on it a while longer unless you find the side effects absolutely intolerable.

I have been on it 12 years, fortunately I don't have side effects any more. It saved my life.

I’m on 7.5mg of mitazapine plus 150mg of sertraline. It’s helping me sleep better without being drowsy the following day, but by god am I having the most batshit dreams since I started taking it

I cant remember my dose but I wouldn't touch it again with a bargepole. I gained about 3 stone. It did sedate me at night but the weight gain made me much more depressed than I already was. I felt quite cross that I wasn't fully warned about that.
