Private diazepam prescription?

pogglewump · 20/07/2025 18:29

Hello everyone
I have a very stressful situation coming up that will last for ten days , that I can’t get out of and really can’t face. Does anybody know if it’s possible to get a short term private diazepam prescription in the UK? I know it’s not ideal. If you know of a GP who will do this, or even if it’s possible, I would be very grateful for your advice.
thank you so much

No, I am a pharmacist and no GPs I know will prescribe diazepam these days.

lnks · 20/07/2025 18:30

Why private? Has your own GP refused?

IDontHateRainbows · 20/07/2025 18:32

I think GPs have really clamped down on it in the past I could get a tiny 2mg dose when very stressed but they've said they don't do that anymore.

This was nhs though private you may find that money talks

pogglewump · 20/07/2025 18:34

Thanks TooManyNiblings, that’s helpful.

Inks- I haven’t asked my GP because I know it’s not a good thing to do and don’t really want it on my records. I’m just feeling desperate about a one off situation

Talk to your GP about alternatives such as beta blockers. 10 days is actually a long time to take diazepam solidly.

lnks · 20/07/2025 18:35

Why wouldn't you want it on her records? There has to be more to this.

Hai2012 · 20/07/2025 18:37

You might be able to get it privately, though Lorazepam might be better than Diazepam for this situation.

If you cant get any at all, then phenergen/promethazine is available OTC and is prescribed by MH Dr's, it might help.

Have you asked friends? Id happily help a friend out and give them some of mine, as long as I knew they had taken it before.

Fergie51 · 20/07/2025 18:38

I called my GP (after explaining to receptionist) that my father had died and was it possible to have something just to help get through the first few days and the funeral. I was prescribed a low dose of Diazepam and it helped with sleep and keep a little calmer. I will always be grateful being listened to and treated with kindness AND the prescription.

SkipperTheEyeChild · 20/07/2025 18:39

I know an online place. They won’t prescribe if you have a GP in the UK though.

You really can't imagine?
Maybe OP is applying to train as something that requires medical records e.g. military? Maybe she is looking to emigrate somewhere that doesn't allow in anyone with a history of MH problems?
Maybe her job requires advanced vetting that includes access to her medical records.
Maybe she needs to use her medical records to prove something for some other reason that this tiny blip would completely mess up.
You don't need to know, but she's concerned and medical records aren't always private so she obviously has her own reasons.

I get diazepam once a year to use on an as and when basis. I get about ten a year.
i have done for years though so maybe that’s different.

DoAWheelie · 20/07/2025 18:41

Have you asked you GP? I've been given a box of 12 tablets to get me through some very rough events a few times. All in the last 18 months. One for my dads death, once when my partner suddenly died, and again a month later when his delayed funeral came around, and again when the anniversaris were coming up (they died just a few weeks apart).

I also had several scripts for 2-4 tablets for the night before/morning of some surgeries I've had over the last year. I can't take the usual anti anxiety meds due to severe asthma though so that might be why.

pogglewump · 20/07/2025 18:41

Ok thank you all your replies, I’m grateful. Fergie51, I think I should probably do similar to you and just tell the GP I’m facing a one off situation that I can’t cope with and ask for help.
I appreciate everyone’s advice

I’ve had private prescriptions from psychiatrists but they always write to my GP and tell them, so it might still be on your records.

FolkWays · 20/07/2025 18:45

On Mumsnet, people always say doctors don't prescribe diazepam any more. They do, my GP has always been and is still happy to do this twice a year for me to go on a plane on holiday. His position is that this is what diazepam is designed for, you are supposed to take it beforehand and during to prevent the uncontrolled escalation of anxiety. He can control the amount, and can see my consumption history, and can see I only take it for flying.

I think private GPs might take a similar view but I would ask your own first. We are talking about 6 tablets once or twice a year, though. I think if I started asking my GP for diazepam for other things / in larger quantities, that would be different.

I have done all the other recommended things for the flying problem, to get me to a point where I can fly with diazepam. It's not going to get better because it's based on a specific flying incident. The diazepam does me no harm and helps me go on holiday.

If you have a one-off situation, I would definitely chat to your GP.

StMarie4me · 20/07/2025 18:46

I had a friend get addicted, buy it from dealers, and die.

Please don’t.

Tink3rbell30 · 20/07/2025 18:48

I don't think so. It's so so hard to get which is frustrating as it's extremely helpful.

pogglewump · 20/07/2025 18:51

Thanks again all the kind and supportive advice. I will think about other ways to manage as the medical records issue concerns me

I have been prescribed diazepam 3 times this year due to very specific circumstances and limited medication options for another reason.

I would as diazepam is highly addictive a private prescription I would imagine they still be sent a message to Gp if you are prescribed it .

ssd · 20/07/2025 18:51

My Dr gave me it recently without a problem. I haven't touched it though, too scared to go near it.

Yeh, I agree. I get quite a lot every month, repeat prescription, so until I saw the posts on Mumsnet I had no idea it was difficult to get

Newbutoldfather · 20/07/2025 18:53

It is such a weird reversal. Doctors used to hand Valium out like sweets.

I am sure it is a bit addictive, but it isn’t heroin. Loads of people (including my mother) used to take it daily and then quit without a huge drama.

IDontHateRainbows · 20/07/2025 18:57

I've taken it in the past when GPs prescribed it more willingly and never once felt addicted.

I say this as someone with an addictive personality. Anything can be addictive if taken as an escape from feelings. Only difference is the degree of harm it causes.
