I am terrified of flying, avoid it at all costs. But I WANT to fly, I want nice holidays in the sun etc etc
I want to see the world etc etc

so, am considering hypnotherapy

esp as have madly booked a holiday abroad!

I have the same problem. I'm absolutely petrified of flying. Well, I say flying, I'm not sure that's the thing behind my phobia. I can fly in a helicopter fine and have loved it each time. However, just the sight of planes scares me. I actually panic when we pass the local airport. I can't stand the look of them even moving around on the ground before they take off. If one flys over low or I hear one I feel my heart race and my back stiffens and I feel sick.

I also love the thought of holidays and me and dh really want to go to Australia when ds is a bit older but I really don't think I can cope with even getting on a plane never mind staying on one for that length of time. I feel like I'm depriving dh aswell really as he really wants to go on all these holidays and watches sky travel all the time trying to convince me of what we are missing out on!

Have no experience of hypnotherapy but will be watching this thread with interest!

I don't find helicopters as scary either - I hate plane take-off particularly

No personal experience, but one of my friends has has hypnotherapy for this and she said it worked brilliantly. She took a short flight first and worked up to a longer flight.

my dh had hypnotherapy for fear of flying a few years ago. he described it as 'taking away the top-line of his stress', so the bit where you absolutely CAN'T get on the plane is gone. but you are still more nervous than an 'ordinary' person would be iykwim. he's now fine with it, apart from take of and landing. he gives it two thumbs up

I also have a phobia of planes, and have a holiday booked with DP for August. I was just going to take the valium route. Is that any good or would hypnotherapy be better do you think?

may as well try hypnotherapy, I am tempted to try it, I really am

I tried hypnotherapy for a severe phobia last yr - had tried it twice before within the last ten yrs and it didn't work. Ended up oing to a psychologist who did a gradual exposure thing with me and then taught me how to do 'tapping' with my hands which i was VVVVVVV sceptical about - but guess what? it worked!!

I take diazepam - works a treat and you're not 'out' of it in any way.

Hi there, I used hypno therapy some years ago as I was flying to Cuba and was petrified. He was great and it worked for me; I went to see him a few times and hey presto I got on the plane and was fine all the way there. I'm still not keen on flying(not the plane being in the air but making a fool out of myself infront of loads of people) but will get on and enjoy the experience. Find someone who has recognised qualifications; there are registered bodies who are recognised and do your homework. It isn't for everybody.Hope this helps

I've been thinking about this. We (DD3 and DH) are off to Jamaica in December. A 10 hour flight and I'm really scared. I've been long haul 4 times now, and dealt with it by drinking a LOT of vodka but now I have a child - I'm thinking it's not the answer. I will definitely look into hypno therapy and perhaps even some kind of herbal calming tablets. (Calms worked a treat for me during my driving test - can u tell I'm nurotic!?!) All the best !
