Hi all,

I’m due to have surgery soon and I am so terrified at the idea of it. I have a severe needle phobia and the thought of having an iv is causing me to lose sleep and not eat. I’ve been to my go but they couldn’t really offer anything. I have had cbt for my phobia in the past. Does anyone have any suggestions - feeling quite desperate!

I was very anxious before my surgery, I didn't see any needles before my surgery, the surgeon and his team came ro see me knowing I was anxious and were brilliant. Explain your worries and concerns and they will talk you through it

You had to have them though right ? It’s specifically the Iv that is causing me the most worry as it’s a larger needle and the positioning. Aswell as the fact it’s in your hand!

I never noticed it, it wasn't uncomfortable and was covered so you can't see the needle

Hiya, i recently had a minor op under GA. I ended up having the anaesthetic administered via a mask like a kid! They couldn't find a decent vein so went for the mask. They must have put the needle in when I was under as I definitely had a needle in later. Could you ask for the mask?

Oh wow- I didn’t think this was a safe option for adults. Was this on the nhs or private ? That would definitely remove a lot of the anxiety!

@Bubblepop752 it was NHS, just about a month ago! I was in as a day case so assume there was no faffing time. Anaesthetist just said we need to use a mask and treat you like a kid! Pretty much next thing I know is im coming round afterwards. No mention of it not being safe

That’s useful to know - thank you!
