Hi all, I have severe emetophobia and it’s currently ruining my life.
I’ve tried all sorts of therapy and now looking to try hypnotherapy, this really is last resort for me.
anybody had hypnotherapy before?? Did it work??
thank you

I've heard mixed reports. Some people have had good results, others said it didn't work.

Out of curiosity, what kinds of therapy have you done already?

TeapotTallulah · 06/07/2025 19:39

Can’t offer any help I’m afraid but I’m following this as DD suffers horribly with emetophobia. It literally controls her life and she’s a virtual recluse because of it.

Im thinking of paying for her to have hypnotherapy too. But

dede88 · 06/07/2025 19:45

@TheOrbOfTheEmmisaryI’ve tried CBT, a couple of times and tried seeing a therapist for my emotions etc. I have also tried hypnotherapy previously but I never actually went ‘under’ so didn’t work. I’m willing to try it again tho. It’s literally my last hope 😩

@TeapotTallulahI really feel for her 😔 it literally controls my life too and I’m practically a recluse because of it. I now won’t eat certain foods I won’t take my kids places etc. it’s an awful phobia to live with.

@dede88

I feel for you too. Sometimes I think she’s doing better then she’ll say something like “I love it when my tummy rumbles when I’m hungry, it makes me feel so safe knowing it’s empty”. She too will only eat safe foods and is constantly washing her hands and sanitising everything around her. She won’t go out for meals unless it’s a chain she feels comfortable with and checks everything I cook her with an electronic probe to make sure it’s hot enough 🙄. She won’t drink or be around drinkers because she’s so afraid of being sick of being near someone else who is sick.

So I do get it…

Can I ask why you’re thinking of trying it again if it didn’t work the first time? I think DD would be like you and very averse to ‘going under’ as she’s utterly terrified of not being in control.

I’ve read that exposure therapy is the best way to treat this awful phobia?

@TeapotTallulahomg she sounds just like me!! It’s so draining too, constantly feeling on edge about it. I’m so mentally exhausted!
I also love it when I feel hungry or one of the kids tell me they are hungry coz then I think phew we aren’t ill or gonna be sick. It’s actually crazy how your mind works with this phobia.
I won’t touch door handles in public places etc. I won’t eat chicken in a restaurant… and the list goes on!

im going to try it again because after speaking to a very good very reputable hypnotherapist on the phone yesterday, he explained to me why the hypnotherapy didn’t work previously. He told me he can get rid of this phobia in 1 session. Although I am not convinced, and for some reason I honestly think I can’t be hypnotised (he told me everybody can it’s just working out which method to hypnotise that person with as everybody is different) I will do anything to get rid of this phobia, so I’m willing to try it again with this person, I don’t care how much it costs either. If it works it would literally change my life!
I kept saying ‘IF it works’ to him on the phone and he laughed every time as he said I know it will work. He also said you have to be very careful when picking hypnotherapists as most are just doing it to make money and don’t actually care about helping people.

i have tried exposure therapy twice, which is the CBT. Unfortunately did not work.

Wow. You and DD are so alike. She won’t touch the button on the train door and will only open doors using a tissue or as a last resort by touching it somewhere obscure where she thinks nobody else will have.

And like you it controls every moment of her waking day. If we go anywhere she scans the room to check where the toilet is in case she’s going to be sick, it’s absolutely awful to witness.

I wonder why this guy is so confident? I hope beyond everything that it works for you. DD is (in my opinion) stuck in fight or flight mode and is always tired - which I think comes from mental exhaustion. It would be fabulous if you could find some relief from that.

If you do have success, please, please update this thread and let me know!

I don’t care where you are, I shall be booking DD in too!

Wishing you all the best and lots of luck 🍀

Oops, I typed out a reply yesterday and didn't send!

There's more kinds of therapy and people need to find the right kind for both their problem and their personality.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy has good results for emetophobia, but only if you're the kind of person who can believe that things don't always make sense and the cause of the phobia might be something seemingly random. If you're giving hypnotherapy a go, then this is likely also where you are.

Hello dede - First of all, I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling, it's a really nasty condition that people go through. I'm a Trauma Informed Clinical Hypnotherapist and I've helped quite a few people with emetephobia with great success. In the type of hypnotherapy that I offer, we always do regression to root cause so that you have full understanding of when, why and how to problem got triggered within you because issues like this are not random, they are often coping strategies created by the subconscious mind to offer some kind of protection or prioritisation. Let me know if you've got any questions.

@dede88Just wanted to wish you good luck with the hypnotherapy. Would be very interested to hear how you get on with it this time round.
