Anxiety after drinking alcohol

Can anyone explain why anxiety is much worse after drinking alcohol, and when I say drinking it’s not a bender I’m talking like a bottle of wine.

Even by sticking to a bottle, eating, going bed early and sleeping well I’m still anxious the day after. I never used to be like this but now it’s horrendous, and I feel like I’m going to die.

Does anyone else experience this? and if so how do you cope with it.

I just stopped drinking. I started to get really anxious after alcohol when I hit peri and the benefits of drinking no longer outweighed the downsides. It wasn’t worth it. Haven’t regretted it for a second.

A bottle of wine by yourself is, um, quite a lot. Maybe cut down to a glass instead?

Elisabeth3468 · 26/06/2025 13:31

Alcohol is a depressant that's why

Meadowfinch · 26/06/2025 13:33

OP a bottle of wine is normally 9 or 10 units. No wonder you feel rough!

Try one glass. Or a soft drink.

mine interferes with Mirtazapine

Drinking a whole bottle by yourself is a binge. So don’t do that.

BlondieMuver · 26/06/2025 13:40

You need to start being honest with yourself about your drinking.

A bottle of wine is alot of alcohol.

Wow, I can totally relate to what you're describing. I went through something very similar even moderate drinking would trigger intense anxiety the next day, like a mental crash I couldn’t explain.

What really surprised me was that it wasn’t just about how much I drank, but why my body and mind were reacting that way. Once I figured that out and made a few key changes, things really shifted for me.

It’s wild how many people go through this and never talk about it.

A bottle is for sharing, I don’t think people should be drinking one alone

Stopped drinking. But a bottle of wine is a lot of wine.

I think the anxiety worsens because, in this area as in many, our bodies operate systems to achieve homeostasis. Alcohol initially reduces anxiety by affecting brain chemicals, and then the brain steps in to restore the balance, leading to a bit of a see-saw over-correction.

That's why we tend to need greater amounts of alcohol (or other drugs) over time to achieve the same pleasant effects - the brain is struggling to 'correct' the over-relaxation by means of neurotransmitters (or whatever! not-a-scientist emoticon) that have the opposite effect.

EDITED TO ADD: And, as others have said, a bottle of wine isn't 'moderate'. It's a lot!

yes this is a very well known side affect of alcohol. I've recently given up because of this and other health issues.

MiseryIn · 30/06/2025 17:29

We call it “hangxiety”. It’s unfortunately standard. I think it’s what contributes to alcoholism- you feel so shady that you have another drink.

Alcohol is a depressive downer that effects you mentally physically and emotionally. It is poison. It's not going to make anything - especially anxiety - better is it.
