im doing some research into the use of progesterone to treat pnd... have found some references to it being used to treat pnd in the first 6m after birth... but i am now 2 yrs postpartum and i am still v much struggling (was too much in denial before)

have noticed over last couple of months that pre-menstrually i am morbidly suicidally low... and ive heard that progesterone can be used to treat pnd, so was wondering if this might be an avenue to pursue.,..

anyone know anything about it?

i am trying to avoid going on ad's again as i really didnt like the way they felt last time.

hi,

I used to be prescribed progesterone pessaries for severe PMS, with depression, and I have to say they worked a treat! However my gp wouldnt let me take them long term because of side effects. There was a doctor called Katherina Dalton who I believe pioneered research in this area. try googling her. Now I take a progesterone early pill. Hope this is some help.

i tried to use progesten-based contraception when i last had PND and it sent my depression into the stratosphere.

not to mention the other, awful side effects i got.

i'd take ADs anyday over hormones.

Cerazette can help as it stops you ovulation but I'd be very cautious if you have a history of PND as it can make some women profoundly depressed. I used agnus castus which was pretty effective.

expatinscotland · 23/05/2008 20:53

it was cerazette i was prescribed when i had PND.

within days, i was suicidal in between wild mood swings.

it intensified my depression worse than i thought possible.

the doc had ruled out other forms of progesten-based contraception like the implant and Depo because of my PND and had tried to hard-sell me the Mirena.

i'm just glad i refused because i'd have needed that coil OUT asap and i know they'd have gotten arsey and tried to just leave me to suffer.

progesten and i don't get along!

Cerazette can be evil, I worked in a family planning clinic and saw one or two women have horrible reactions to it. Having said that I've seen it work brilliantly for severe PMS.

I'm having a mirena in a couple of weeks so am really hoping I'm Ok with it as I don't "do" progesterone very well!

dh is having the snip after this one.

whew!

if he weren't willing to, though, i'd get sterlised.

liath · 23/05/2008 21:13

I think it'll be the snip for DH, too if this doesn't work out. I'd prefer to have the option of another baby for a bit, though.

expatinscotland · 23/05/2008 21:14

ah, see, this is no. 3. i'll be nigh on 38 when it's born.

we both feel pretty done after this one!

snippy snip.

im the same as expat WRT progesterone.i was given progesterone suppositries after dd2.i dont know what effect they had as she was in hospital for 2 weeks with severe bronchiolitis so my mood was all over the place anyway.however,i do know the mirena coil made my depressions worse, the injection(i had after dd1)caused extreme mood swings, and the POP back when i was young made me very depressed as well.

my PMS has improved a bit with magnesium supplements, and i am on prozac for the PND.

and i have an IUD for contraception(dh too young for snipping and i cant be 'done')
