Fluoxetine and Negative Thoughts

Hi all I have been on antidepressants now for many years . Most of that time I’ve taken Sertraline but a few years ago I felt it wasn’t as effective plus was concerned I was gaining weight so doctor moved me to Fluoxetine (20mg). I seemed ok for awhile but my mood has declined and I have been thinking for at least the past year I would be better off not here. I never got this feeling before and have read it can be a side effect. I was also diagnosed recently with ADHD which has made me wonder whether this antidepressant is making me worse . Anyone else experienced this please ?

The leaflet in the box if fluoxitine says something about seeing your doctor if you have suicidal thoughts. I think it can be a side effect in some people. You should be able to get an urgent appointment for this.

I was on anti depressants for anxiety throughout my 30s. Sometime in my 40s I noticed my mood declining as well and I began to have thoughts like you describe. Mainly out if desire to escape.

Im now in my 50s and I feel convinced this experience has been related to the declining hormones of menopause.

Fluoxetine gave me suicidal thoughts when I first started taking it. I've never had them before so it was a bit of a shock to go through. I don't know why I never reached out to my GP, but I really should have done! It did eventually pass but it was horrid. I hope you get to speak to your GP soon

Yes, it's a known side effect and the reason it's not prescribed for anyone with a history of thoughts or acts of self-harm. Obviously don't come off it without speaking to your GP, but they'll likely taper you off it quite quickly. Do get an urgent appointment if you can.
