Looking for an antidepressant that won't stop orgasms

I'm female, in my 40s and in a new relationship, our sex life is great but I also suffer from general anxiety and know I need help with it.
I've tried Citalopram and Sertraline and they have all seriously affected my sex drive and completely stop me from orgasming.
Are there any that don't do this? Or should I go for a very low dosage?

I took duloxetine 20mg and it didn’t have this side affect.

SeriouslyStressed · 30/05/2025 22:40

Vortioxitine/brintellix

Nursemumma92 · 30/05/2025 22:41

Fluoxetine 20mg and 40mg never stopped mine.

I believe Mirtazapine is not known for sexual dysfunction. But it makes you pile on the pounds which may not be what you’re after. I basically take it for a sleep disorder along with an SSRI, so can’t vouch for the sexual side effects. SSRIs tank sexual function, in an awful way - that I can vouch for!

I think the old MAOIs and tricyclics are less troublesome on the sexual front but they are problematic for other reasons.

No easy answers. It sucks. Are you getting talking therapy for the GAD?

Antidepressanthelp · 30/05/2025 23:00

If I was single ,I would happily take the SSRIs but I don't want to have to sacrifice a great sex life now that I'm in a relationship. I will see if my GP can prescribe some of the mentioned ones above, thank you

Women on antidepressants… longer acting SSRI’s can sometimes have a weekend “holiday” from meds without any effect on mood.’Adding bus-irons can sometimes help with sexual function.
talk to your GP.

Antidepressanthelp · 30/05/2025 23:06

@LunaTheCat thanks , I see my boyfriend several times a week and we are having sex several times each time we see each other, a weekend break unfortunately wouldn't really help but I appreciate the advice

Mirtrazopene (sp) is the only one that worked for me. It’s one you take at night, so helped my difficulty in falling asleep. Staying asleep can sometimes be an issue, but not as much as before the medication change.

Funnyduck60 · 30/05/2025 23:10

Venlafaxine is really bad but it makes me so much more balanced I am happy to compromise. I agree missing tablets helps but tbh I just concentrate on pleasing DH. OK not quite the same but I don't feel the need to stop intimacy because of sexual dysfunction.

PercyFredGeorge · 30/05/2025 23:15

Trazadone

Totally don't have this issue on venaflaxine 350mg. But I guess like most its a common side effect.

Op bar the one mentioned youd have to try them all to find the one that suits but that will do more harm than good both mentally and sexually!!! What a pickle....

Can I get prescribed Mirtazepine from having anxiety? Or are there other reasons it would be prescribed?

It’s prescribed for anxiety and depression.

BridgetRandomfuck · 30/05/2025 23:31

I had this problem on Prozac and fluoxetine but never on citalopram, and I’ve been taking it for 15 years. I think you just need to shop around and fine something that works with your body

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/05/2025 23:39

OP when did you last try citalopram?
I had it around 6/7 years ago and it had this effect, also made me sleepy.
i went back on it about 18 months ago, no symptoms and lots of orgasms!
GP suggested that they are often slightly tweaked and reformulated so might be worth trying again?

Gattopardo · 30/05/2025 23:50

Mirtazapine is a standard drug for depression.

I’ll be honest and say it never worked for me for anxiety in the way SSRIs do.

But, brains are very unique so it could work for you.

I really do feel for you, having to make a choice between totally human fun (!) and not being an anxious ball of energy.

have you ever had times in your life when your anxiety was better? What brought that on if so??

SeriouslyStressed · 19/06/2025 21:42

Vortioxitine, brand name Brintellix, it’s a new one
