Advice during recovery

I'm recovering from a psychotic break and hospitalisation. It's been very slow, however I'm getting there.

I've finally got to grips with cleaning the house, sorting out bills and other projects but am struggling with self neglect.

In addition I'm physically not well so movement is limited.

For some reason (no idea why), I can't shower and don't want water on me. I've been washing my armpits and genitals at the sink with a flannel but haven't washed the rest of me including my hair for over a year.

I'm now looking to work on my hygiene and was wondering what people recommend. I'm looking at no rinse body wash or large wipes. I'm thinking of dry shampoo and have organised a pedicure to take care of my feet which are a state.

Does this sound good? Any suggestions?

Are you taking medication to support your recovery?

Would you be able to tolerate a hairdresser washing your hair in a salon sink? You could email a salon to let them know about your situation and ask if they would do a hair wash for you. I would only go if pre-arranged as salons can have rules about how recently you need to have washed your hair.

Are you managing to wash your clothes and wear fresh clothes each day? Do you use a good antiperspirant?

If you aren't showering I think it is very important that your clothes are clean. Perhaps add an antibacterial laundry cleanser to your laundry routine.

These type of "shampoo caps" might be of interest. I'm not experienced with them so research different brands and their reviews.

@Winter2020 Thanks. No I'm not on medication and I have agoraphobia so visiting a salon is not possible at the moment.

I used to have a hairdresser come to my home but I'm not sure how she'd be able to wash my hair given my mobility issues.

I'm not wearing clean clothes every day, no. I am washing my clothes though.

Those caps are a great idea. I'll look into them. I read that you shouldn't use dry shampoo too often so they might be a good alternative.

Were you not encouraged to go on some medication to support your recovery? Perhaps an anti-depressant?

I think if you are not able to shower yet then work towards clean clothes as regularly as you can. Particularly changing socks and pants daily. Also changing your flannel and a small towel daily.

Could you also work on one area of your body at a time? E.g. could you soak your feet in a bucket of soapy water before your pedicure?

Edited

I'm not particularly depressed, I have just developed some phobias.

I am planning to soak my feet before the pedicure.

If you are not anti medication it might be worth asking your GP or specialist if they could recommend something to support your recovery. You might be surprised at the effect it could have.

I was on medication and came off it. It's wasn't making any difference. I did this with the approval of my psychiatrist.

My psychiatrist said that recovery will be slow which it is.
