Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone has had a history of psychosis, fully recovered, and had social workers involved while pregnant.

For context, I had a cannabis-induced psychosis episode about a year ago. I stopped smoking and haven’t had any episodes since. However, the episode was so severe that I had to be hospitalised. Additionally, when I was 14, I had social workers involved due to domestic abuse in my family.

I’ve fully recovered from this and plan to get pregnant in the next few months. I can’t help but wonder if social workers will be notified of my pregnancy and closely monitor me throughout. I understand that if I’m a responsible mother and do everything right, it should be fine. However, I can’t help but imagine how stressful it would be to have them involved in my life while pregnant. I’ve heard many horror stories about mothers having their children taken away due to wrong assessments, and it honestly seems like a nightmare to deal with.

It's commendable that you've taken steps toward recovery. While your past experiences may be noted they don't automatically lead to social services involvement during pregnancy. Maintaining open communication with your healthcare providers can help ensure you receive the support you need. Hello I have bipolar and have experienced psychosis as part of manic and depressive episodes. I have a 4 yo and am pregnant again. I haven't had any social services involvement. To do have the involvement of the perinatal MH team from late pregnancy and throughout the first year post birth as my diagnosis means I have a 50% risk of severe pnd or psychosis. When I had my daughter I did develop both and spent time in a mother and baby unit. There were some women in their with social services involvement but also ladies like myself with none.
There was only one time concern was expressed by my care team and this was when my psychosis briefly made me believe my daughter was evil. In this instance, my partner was asked to not leave me alone for almost a week whilst I could be assessed. My cpn and HV came together and determined that even throughout the time I had the thoughts I continued to care for my daughter and these specific thoughts had only happened the once. I placed her in a place of safety whilst waiting for the thoughts to pass and I was able to continue to care for her. It is your actions and just the symptoms that matter.
I'm pregnant again and I'm awaiting my first appointment with the perinatal MH team and social services haven't been mentioned even with my history of post partum depression and psychosis.
