Hi there my first time posting ao be kind. I'm mum to a 20 year old autistic adhd sensory with learning difficulties son who is very isolated. We have navigated the education system with fight and fury and come out the other side slightly disillusioned and battle scarred. My son still has a sense of humour and something to offer society. I started wondering the other day how many other young adults are like this 'stuck, lost, afraid and alone' and their parents battling still everyday ? I certainly am. So anyone got any funny laugh out loud stories relating to these conditions to firstly make us laugh and secondly hey maybe I can put it all in a book for us all to make us feel united, not alone or different, happy? Give us a smile. ? Our kids might just pick it up to read it as well as its been a long time since my son did that! Xx

I’m at the same stage with my youngest autistic adult child. Battle weary but still standing to fight another day.

Not sure I have much funny to share but hoping for sunshine and some peaceful days soon.

My ds has very limited language use for communication purposes/ getting his needs met. He's now a teen moving to adult services. He loves cartoons and has echolalia (where he repeats words, phrases and scripts without knowing what they mean). He's said all sorts inappropriately. Once we got into a lift in a large shopping centre and a large lady got in with us- he started shouting "it's Hilda the hippo". Another time a woman was complaining about him in a park and he started sniffing the air and repeatedly asked "what's that smell?" With everyone assuming he meant the rude woman. We use a wheelchair for him as he has hypermobility and believe he gets pains in his legs (can't know for certain as he can't communicate it but it appears he does) he can also elope at times. We took him to a beach and struggled with the wheelchair and he was loving it, flapping and making noises. You could see people looking and pulling a sad face (poor disabled child etc, feeling sorry for him). When we stopped and he got out of the chair he ran at what felt like a million miles an hour with my husband trying to catch him. My eldest shouted "it's a miracle! Praise Jesus!" As he said he could see all the people staring.

I think you have to find the humour in these situations or you'll go mad.

Ds 16 wanted some flowers for his gf a few weeks ago. I joked on what had he done and therefore how big did the bunch need to be...??!
Negotiated a sensible size /cost that he was happy she would be happy with..
Walking back to the car a man ahead had a huge bouquet.. Ds questioned whatever he had done must be bad needing a huge bunch like that....
