Mirtazapine withdrawal

I’ve been on Mirtazapine for about two years. It was prescribed partly to help my insomnia. To start with it helped, then not so much. If I cut down, even a small amount, I can’t sleep. I’m desperate to get off it. Anyone got any tips please?

What dose are you on?

Zoldevort · 21/04/2025 00:21

I’ve been on 30mg. I’m down to 15mg but I struggling with insomnia.

I’m wondering whether to go cold turkey. Each time I reduce, the insomnia is brutal. Can it get any worse? Or do I get it over and done with?

Every other night for 2 weeks.
Then stop.
Try something like promethazine to help you afterwards.
You can take it for up to 10 days at a time (gp recommended)

Thanks, I’ll see how I get on.

Thanks you too. 😍

To start with it helped me sleep but now it doesn’t and if I don’t take it, I can’t sleep at all. I really wish I’d never taken it. No one warns you how bad withdrawal is.

Yeah I think it's really dodgy. I hope you can gradually reduce but tell the GP and hopefully go onto something more suitable. X

It is also an antidepressant, please don't just stop taking it, you should withdraw slowly and gradually but please could I ask why you want to stop taking it? You are on a low dose and if it helps you sleep why do you feel the need to stop?

It doesn’t help me sleep. It did to start with but no longer. My mental health feels ok, so it makes sense to stop taking it. The only problem I have is the brutal insomnia when I reduce the dose.

Wide awake, again. I’ve taken a Nytol but it’s not helping. I’ve contacted my GP surgery and I’m waiting for someone to get back to me. I’m taking 15mg Mirtazapine now, I won’t go back to 30mg. It’s an awful drug to get off. No one warns you.

I was also prescribed it for chronic insomnia. It worked to get me to sleep but not to stay asleep. It also made me eat like a starved human and I piled on 30kg. I only realised much later that it is a drug used to encourage the elderly to eat !

I changed to amitriptyline which my doctor is happy to prescribe long term. 30mg a night sends me to sleep for at least 7 hours.

The weight took 9 months to get shot of with Mounjaro.

Sorry to hear this OP. I find it works for me but I find it very difficult to wake up the next day if I take it.
I am on a very low dose but I sleep through 3 alarms when I take it and I can't afford to do that as I work.
It is hideous not sleeping 😴.

Yes I’ve put on weight. That’s something else I’ve got to tackle now.

Hey @Zoldevort Hope you're well.

How is it going? I'm trying to reduce mine too.
The weight gain is annoying isn't it? But I think it's kind of mostly water/bloating kind of thing.

I've been using magnesium oil. You can make it by boiling Epsom salts. If you put it on your legs and feet it helps sleep. Also in the bath and shower.

Check in here to motivate eachother if you like, and others too if the want to come back on here?
💐🍀❤️ X
