Week before period severe mood dips

I get severe mood dips the week before my period. Although I’m aware that this happens each month, I can’t pull myself out of it or reason with myself, it lasts the full week prior to coming on. It’s horrible because I know I’m not nice to be around and I hate myself. Has anyone taken anything to help with this, ideally any herbal remedies?

Do you drink alcohol?

I haven’t drank for over 3 months and the difference is staggering, PMS wise. I wasn’t a heavy drinker either, one bottle of red over the week.

I have also been much more active, walking and running more over the past few months which likely helps.

I do take magnesium which generally helps me sleep better so alleviates bad moods generally.

I had tried Primrose and things, but nothing has made the difference activity and not drinking has.

Does it clear as soon as your period starts? If so could be PMDD.

I didn't used to. A day or 2 before until period arrived but the slide into menopause came and I was an utter nightmare. Had to get hrt for various reasons, including that one in the end.

I really relate to this. I think over the last year or so has been really noticeable to the point I'm wondering whether it's worth it to get a PMDD diagnosis. I get upset or angry over something I normally wouldn't care about. Alcohol definitely does exacerbate the problem. I've not actively taken anything for it or been to the doctors but I try to cut myself some slack over those few days. Eat what I like within reason, connect with friends and try to relax physically and mentally. Just try and keep my mood up or at least stable. Something that helps is having a husband that is completely understanding and knows when to give me space and when I need tlc or for him to take over with child/ home related stuff.

I have done seed cycling since I suffered bad PMS since my second birth. Look it up but I basically take a mixture of seeds with my breakfast (yoghurt) most days of the week. I swear it has helped with my symptoms. But I’ve also improved my health in general, less alcohol, more exercise etc, as I’m reaching 40 soon.

Ever since having my DS I always get a major rage the week before. Never used to. I'm almost 40 so possibly peri related. I haven't tried anything but I'll maybe try tips from here because it's ridiculous how angry I get over insignificant things and like you say, I can't stop it

Magnesium helps ladies!

I don’t drink alcohol. Well, very, very rarely. I’ve got a 5 month old and a 3 year old so sleep is at a minimum.
I do think exercise could help, I used to exercise a lot, but, unfortunately I don’t have a ‘village’ to help with the little ones.
It does tend to end once I come on my period and have wondered about PMDD

I should add, I’m 38 and this has been the case for quite a few years now, not just since the kids, but it does feel much worse now. Possibly because I can’t just take myself off and never get alone time. Plus snapping at my toddler makes me feel just terrible and really hate myself.

I have ordered some pre-menstrual support vitamins from Wild Nutrition, I’ll see how I get on with those.
I will also look in to seed cycling, thank you.

I sometimes get this. It does help to be aware of it and know it will pass. But if its causing you distress or changing your behaviour- I think its just keeping a list of things that help. Carbs are my go to.
