Has anyone been an inpatient recently?

How was it? I think I’m heading that way. Last time I was in it was terrible. There were really very unwell people, violent, aggressive. I stayed in my room mostly. I just wondered if it has improved?

What do you mean whether ‘it’ has improved ? We have no idea where you may be being admitted or which patients are currently there.

MrGruber · 25/03/2025 02:33

No , but so sorry you hjad that traumatising & unsafe experience .

Hopefully others will answer your post and perhaps you could try asking if anyone might join you in a support thread - I would be happy to pop into one .

. You did amazingly well to get through it once

PS .. just realised that might be stressful to see a poster with anapparently male name ( it would have been for me at certain points in my life )

I am female but years ago all the other character names from the Paddington books had been used up so I must find a more suitable one

Hi,
I am an inpatient at the moment in a large city mental hospital. I am sorry to say the violent and really unwell patients are still on the ward however where I am they are soon removed and taken to PICU.
Currently where I am it is a quieter period.
I do understand about staying in your room but I do advise you to try and come out for short periods of the day for your own wellbeing. I became depressed staying in my room all the time staring at four walls.
Choose the quieter times to come out.
Dont worry there will be others like you on the ward. Take care x

I understand that but general consensus was that recently psychiatric hospitals had become very overstretched. I wondered if that still felt the same. Have you been an impatient recently?

Thank you so much. I do find hospital traumatising but I do recognise sometimes it is the only really solution.
I hope you are ok and that things settle for you soon x

I was, for around three months not too long ago. My experience on the whole was reasonably positive. It was an acute ward, so obviously the people there were also incredibly unwell, hence their admission (and mine) but the staff were supportive and approachable, there was a wide range of activities available each day and time set aside for 1-1 with my key worker for a check in each day.
Overall, I accepted that I needed to be there because I was too unwell not to be and I felt safe and well cared for by the staff.

If you are struggling with my post you could just ignore it? Other people have been helpful.

It entirely depends on the combination of other patients.

I work on a male ward and we’ve had a few weeks with some really unwell chaps , so it’s been very busy and challenging at times, but now it’s calming down as they are getting better and approaching discharge.

I hope that if you do need to be admitted that it will be a positive experience for you

feel free to pm me if you have any questions

I only go to hospital if I am dragged there and nothing else works. I need to be totally out of it. I have been in mental health hospitals in three different countries four different hospitals and uk one is the worst. Other countries they have open and closed wards. The most unwell stay in closed ward and the open wards are calm. I was three months in NHS hospital and it was awful. Things on offer were arts&crafts group once a week. I saw psychiatrist once a week. They had six person’s wards and it was really a mess the whole place. Everything was so slow.

luckily I have been stable for several years and I aim to keep it so.

Thanks both of you. My experiences previously weren’t great, guess I was kind of hoping labour had made some changes!
