Reassurance needed: Poured bleach on urine in toilet

wildflower93 · 21/02/2025 22:59

I'm sure this must have happened to people other than me before?

I'm absolutely freaking out.

I noticed that the toilet started to bubble and then realised there was paper and wee still in there.

Google has either told me that it's really bad or it's fine and nothing in between.

I've rang 111 as tried to ring poison control myself but they only speak to those passed through 111.

Please no nasty comments. I've gone to my parents' house with my 2 year old.

I struggle with contamination OCD but have had an upset stomach and don't usually use bleach 😩

Can someone educate me as to why this shouldn't be done?

Bleach mixed with urine can create very small amounts of chloramine gas. Though it is very very unlikely to cause any issues.

OP - at most, you can flush, open a window and leave the bathroom while things air out. Some fresh air and then return. Even this is likely unnecessary for the most part but may help any concerns you have.

Greenwallpinkwall · 21/02/2025 23:16

Hey OP.

This will not harm you or your child.

I often put bleach into the toilet and before I can clean it and flush one of the boys in my house has gone in for a wee without realising.

Do you have any grounding or coping strategies which you can utilise this evening?

Wobblemonster · 21/02/2025 23:19

This happens ll the time in my house.

Why did you go to your parents house rather than just flush the loo? I appreciate you have OCD but your actions are illogical, you must realise this happens all the time as people bleach toilets frequently.

We have 4 loos and I pour bleach down them every night before bed (if I remember). People piss on said bleachy loo every morning, or night. It’s fine.

Bleach down every toilet every night is so excessive. It’s bad for the environment.

Maybe, but I love bleach. I’m not into cleaning as a rule.

My husband ponders that I was raised in a swimming pool 😂

Hercisback1 · 21/02/2025 23:25

How did you accidentally create mustard gas?

MissHollysDolly · 21/02/2025 23:29

Wait what? What's the problem? Can someone explain this?

HelenCurlyBrown · 21/02/2025 23:32

OP, if you suffer from OCD, you probably know that seeking reassurance is not going to help. Especially on a forum where most posters won’t have understanding of your condition. Step away and use other coping strategies.

Icepinkeskimo · 21/02/2025 23:32

wildflower93 · 21/02/2025 23:10

I asked for no horrible responses.

I am receiving therapy. I have been for multiple years. It is manageable and I'm fine 90% of the time.

A few days before my period is due, it is severe and something I have to just let go.

There's no need for rudeness.

Get a life instead of posting on anxious women's posts and making them feel bad about themselves.

I apologise if you interpreted my comments as rude.

I asked a question, what was your rationale for ringing poison control?
Was this done in a moment of panic?
What did you expect to happen with normal household strength bleach in the toilet?

As for your comment regarding “get a life” trust me, as a lead medical consultant I have one hell of a life. Your welcome.

anonny55 · 21/02/2025 23:37

God we'd all be dead in this house if that was so bad. I regularly chuck bleach down the toilet, leave it then DH goes in and has a wee over it

This.

I’m so sorry OP. Seeking reassurance isn’t supposed to help long term.

My DC has OCD so I have some inkling into how debilitating it is.
I want to tell you to forget about the bleach/wee, but if you’re anything like DC that won’t help you anyway.
OCD can be horrific.
Many people on this thread won’t understand that.

Please mind yourself 💐

Please don’t worry.

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve put bleach down the children and then my children are going in and out still having their normal wees.

You’d think the fact the water was blue would make them realise there’s bleach down there and to use another toilet, but sadly not.

No harm has ever come to any of us from them persistently doing this.

You really don't need to be putting bleach down the children, I know they can get grubby but a bath should suffice 😂

@Toomanyoatmealandraisincookies you are both absolutely correct. Reassurance and seeking is my compulsion. However, in this circumstance there is a real posed threat rather than fictitious and hearing other people who have done similar has actually helped considerably so.

Just for further context- I accidentally created mustard gas when pregnant with my 2 year old. l

I've essentially mixed ammonia (in tiny forms) and bleach.

And when you flushed, the additional water would have diluted it from next to nothing to nothing at all.

To avoid such reactions again, you could switch to disinfectant rather than bleach throughout the house. Or stick to bleach everywhere and remember that it won't create any risk at such quantities.

Just to make it clear to everyone, I don’t make my children drink bleach 🤣

It was just a very unfortunate typo 🤣🤣

MuddyPawsIndoors · 21/02/2025 23:54

I've never known bleach to bubble and I use copious amounts in the loo.

It was probably air escaping from the pipe when you squirted the bleach.

wildflower93 · 21/02/2025 23:54

@NorthernGirl1981 @OwlInTheOak thank you for the laugh 😆 made me laugh even with my wild anxiety

That made my day, thank you for that 😁😁😁 I think maybe I need to get a life instead of the lead medical consultant up thread 😁

babyproblems · 21/02/2025 23:56

What is the problem with bleach and urine??? I genuinely haven’t ever heard this before. I definitely think they would not sell a cleaning product - widely used in toilets all over the world - if it was poisonous on contact with urine.

menopausalfart · 21/02/2025 23:59

I've had OCD since I was a child so I understand your anxiety. You will be fine though. I constantly use bleach in the loo with no ill effects,

wildflower93 · 22/02/2025 00:34

Gettingbysomehow · 21/02/2025 23:09

I've done it loads of times. Nothing happened. I wasn't gassed to death.
I think you need to have therapy though. This kind of over reaction can be very damaging to a child's mental health.
My own mother had OCD and a mental illness and it really messed me up.

I didn't ask? I'm sorry you're messed up? Maybe you should get therapy too? My child is happy, free and thriving. I have therapy. And medication. Blips happen and there was a genuine reaction that could have been dangerous but luckily wasn't.

Again, my OCD is under control 90% of the time. I probably have 1-2 bad days a month.

We go for a drive to get him to sleep sometimes so he knows no different.

Mustard gas?

What?

PsychoHotSauce · 22/02/2025 00:45

OP I used to be a cleaner and I've done this so many times with no ill effects. I've also done viakal in the bathroom, not realising some amateur had just bleached the whole place shortly before. That was BAD and happened more than once (ugh!) but I just left the room and opened the windows and 10 years later no ill effects whatsoever.

Please don't worry, I'm serious.

Funnywonder · 22/02/2025 00:48

Just a bit of solidarity here. I had OCD as a teenager and my son has it very severely now. It's horrible. You're doing fantastically well to have it under control 90 per cent of the time.

Ubugly · 22/02/2025 00:57

I didn’t realise this was a thing to worry about until about a week ago and have non coloured bleach so never remembered! It’s been years and still been fine so don’t worry!
