Should I say anything

A friend of mine is seeing a therapist every week and has been for over year. It’s £100 a week! She can sort of afford it but definitely could use the money elsewhere too.

Therapist doesn’t offer any other option other than weekly. The thing is she’s not really making any progress and I think she now just likes going and having a weekly download. She expressed to me that she doesn’t feel as if she’s making a lot of progress but continues to go.

Ive suggested that perhaps she finds someone with a more flexible approach so she could do every other week or maybe take a break and see if she feels ok without.

Im uneasy because I feel the therapist is taking her money for nothing really. Would you say more or leave her to it?

I am a Counsellor myself. Counsellors don't give advice. We are there to listen. Get to the root causes of issues and get them to open up and talk about them.

If she wants a more direct approach. She'll need a Psychologist. As they can give advice, change thinking patterns, and teach new methods to deal with things. I am currently studying psychology at university as I do want to be offer direct help. Rather than just listening.

Point her in the direction of finding a local psychologist.

Seems I can’t change but this is my uneasiness with the situation because her thinking patterns have not changed. She seems stuck and maybe that’s on her but paying someone to help if it isn’t doing anything seems wrong. Maybe the Psychologist should be saying something.

If you say your friend has been seeing the Psychologist for a while. By now she would be working on changing her thinking patterns. If she feels she isn't then as a helping professional, with an ethical framework the Psychologist should be following. The psychologist should be advising her client, that the therapy is not working for her. Suggest alternatives, as it is ethical practice to advise a client if they see no changes within the client or the client is stuck in ruminating thinking patterns.
