My sons been on fluoxetine for almost 6 months, 20mg then 40mg and he feels it's made no difference at all to his mental state.

They've now switched him to sertraline.

Am hoping for some positive stories as Fluoxetine dis absolutely nothing for him :(

AD meds work differently for different people and what works for one won’t necessarily for another . I had better luck with an snri than sertraline but I couldn’t deal with the drowsiness so had to swap back !
I hope things improve for him x

I know it's all individual but if there's someone out there that had no change on fluoxetine and felt better on sertraline then there's a possibility it might make my son want to live again.
I'm just trying to find some hope.

Yes, neither worked so I was swapped to citaloptam 40mg and never looked back. That’s was 28years ago though. Be very careful using anti depressants they are almost impossible to come off after you’ve been on them for so long.

Well the alternative is non reversible so I'm willing to take my chances.

I've been on ciltalopram 20 years and I don't want to come off it. It works for me so why do I need to suffer without it?

If his brain is imbalanced in a similar way then a tablet a day to even him out is no huge burden.

Do you think diabetics shouldn't be on insulin for life?

My daughter was on fluoxetine and felt it did nothing, made her feel numb. She went off them and realised they had been working, so asked to go back on antidepressants. The psychiatrist switched her to sertraline and that has worked better, although I think she's going to be reviewed soon and the dosage (currently 50mg) will be upped.

It didn't make her feel numb like fluoxetine did, but she has had dark thoughts return, which is why I think the dosage will be increased.

Still it took a good three-months to start to see/feel a difference.

My 19 year old was on 40mg of Fluoxetine which work for a while, but then started self harming and suicidal thoughts again. He switched to 50mg of setraline and there is a bit of an improvement. He isn't perfect and I still worry (only been on for 2 months) but there is a bit of an improvement (touch wood).

Sending hugs, I know how hard it is

not a direct swap, as there were some years between both incidents.

fluoxetine, I found, just made me feel really numb and distant. I didn't feel any connection with what was going on around me, it felt like I was watching it all on TV.

in more recent years, after a gap from that of many years, I needed something for my anxiety, and they suggested fluoxetine, and I explained why I didn't like it for me. so they gave me sertraline instead. and it works really well for me. I just feel like my normal self, but less anxious.
it IS important to remember though, the first month or two, you are very likely to get an absolute shopping list of side effects (loss of appetite, nausea, dizziness, slurring, shaking hands, night sweats etc) but they do tend to pass once your body fully adjusts to it.
