Reasonable adjustment

sushibelt · 07/01/2025 17:46

Work want me to do a presentation and my manager's manager is getting funny about me not wanting to do it. My anxiety just won't let me. Do you think I can ask for this to be a reasonable adjustment? There are others who can do it.

Being anxious is not the same as a diagnosed anxiety disorder. Educate yourself.

Massive drip feed there. Your OP just said “My anxiety just won't let me”
Educate me then - What is your diagnosed anxiety disorder and who diagnosed it?

UghFletcher · 07/01/2025 20:44

What's the reason for the presentation?

Maybe they feel it's a developmental piece for you? Could any of them mentor / coach you before the presentation so you feel more comfortable? Could you do lots of practice runs with your manager? Could you record it on teams and send to them?

Those are ideas of reasonable adjustments rather than just refusing to do it

MissJoGrant · 07/01/2025 20:46

OP, with respect, you can't really get arsey with other posters when you're drip feeding like this.

Your original post doesn't declare an anxiety disorder and, imo, implies you've never done a presentation before.

So long as you are an employee, and your employer knows that you view your anxiety disorder as a disability, then you can ask for reasonable adjustments. They can refuse if it changes the role of your job and there is no one else who can perform this task and no other tasks for you to do.

GiddyFawn · 07/01/2025 20:53

OP ignore the people who don’t understand.

As the children who get reasonable adjustments in school move into work, workplace reasonable adjustments will become the norm.

This will be because the new generation of workers will have grown up understanding everyone has different needs and adjustments are normal.

Unfortunately we are not there quite yet but it’s getting closer.

JC03745 · 07/01/2025 21:00

I agree with others- you have drip fed about your abilities/anxiety and then been rude to people about the fact you have done presentations before and accused THEM of being patonising! How would we know that you've presented before and know all about it, when you've even held this info from your current company??? 🙄

I too was going to suggest asking if you could you record the presentation? Someone as experienced at presentations as yourself would surely think of this though, rather than just expecting others to pick up the slack?

I’m not sure that it will help people with genuine, serious MH issues for it to become the norm for adjustments to be requested by the world and his wife for dealing with normal situations.

It's in the mental health section so I thought it was for people with mental health issues??

I was being given advice on how to do presentations. I wanted advice on reasonable adjustments for people with anxiety the mental health version not the ooh im a bit nervous version.

It doesn't imply anything of the sort. People might assume I don't know how to do a presentation but I didn't say anything along those lines. Just that the anxiety disorder is preventing me.

Educate yourself with the NHS website or something. I'm not discussing my diagnosis on the internet with complete strangers.

Doesn't have to be diagnosed. Under Equality Act it's something that is long-term and impacts your day to day life.

OP I'm pleased you've got the idea to offer to record the presentation. Would you feel able to answer any questions after? If so that could be something else to add in.

Are you suggesting I do not have a serious mental health issue? It has a significant impact on my life.

OP said that it was diagnosed though, hence my question.

No it doesn't it shows I don't want to discuss my diagnosis I want to discuss reasonable adjustments for people with anxiety related disorders that prevent them doing a presentation

You said you had a diagnosed anxiety condition, I was asking what condition it was and who had diagnosed it but you seem reluctant to answer that for some reason. 🤣

But you are discussing your mental health on the internet with a bunch of strangers. You're also being pretty rude and snippy

sushibelt · 07/01/2025 22:26

I'm not I'm discussing reasonable adjustments and I'm "snippy' because I've basically been told by people being anxious is normal as if my mental health issues are nothing.

Read back over your comments. You are reaping what you sow here with your unnecessarily rude and unpleasant tone

GinghamJoe · 07/01/2025 22:26

I'm not sure I understand some of the responses on this thread. The OP's post made perfect sense to me.

I do actually have experience with this from the other side, we have done 1-2-1 presentations (if possible) and if not a recorded Zoom one/PowerPoint with audio. Never been a problem.

Thank you. It's a great idea. I shall suggest that. Questions in the room after would be equally as impossible as the presentation though you have got me thinking outside the box - I could suggest we all have a tea break in the breakout area where I'd be happy to answer questions one on one.

Thanks so much to everyone who's helped

OP posts:
ThatNaughtyTabby · 07/01/2025 22:30

What’s the problem specifically with doing the presentation? Maybe it would be good to give it a try? You might manage it okay as sometimes we imagine things worse than they are.
