Can you discharge yourself from CMHT

Is it possible to discharge yourself from CMHT? I want to be discharged but am not being despite no engagement for ages, I’ve asked to be discharged, why am I not being? Someone not in CMHT said about duty of care, but I don’t get that? I’m not under a CTO so surely it’s voluntary? I don’t understand

If you disengage with them long enough, they'll discharge you themselves.

I work for MH services. I understand that you’re frustrated, but, as you’ve recently been so poorly, the CMHT would rather see you regularly and make sure you’re ok/are taking your meds, than discharge you from their books and have you relapse and come back into services via sectioning/136 suite. Once you’ve been discharged they’ll reallocate your care coordinator and, as you probably know, getting a new care co can be a long process-plus they want to avoid a relapse in the first place if they can. Do you know what triggered your most recent period of illness?

Have you put it in writing? That’s what I did when I discharged myself in 2023 and they sent me back a letter saying I was officially discharged a couple of weeks later. I totally get not wanting to be under their care, I am thinking of discharging myself again, would like 2025 to be a fresh start away from mental health services in my life.

Yeah I have, no response though. It is nice to not be under services, feel more part of life for me anyway

I think the biggest issue for people who have bipolar disorder is stopping medication and the biggest reason people stop is because they feel much better.

I guess the concern might be that if you believe you don't need CMHT because you are newly stable you may at some point also think you don't need your meds.

Do you know what caused you to get very unwell last time?

I have done that after being discharged, but I learnt my lesson & it was a long time ago, was bad though. Meds change caused it this time, but that’s sorted now, although recently & I have itchy feet to be discharged

I have been stable for four years and they keep seeing me every six months. I don't understand why they don't discharge me.

Thats great you’ve been stable for so long, it’s tough isn’t it. That’s a big gap! It is weird how they don’t discharge. Is that the psychiatrist? I could maybe cope with seeing the psychiatrist that infrequently.

Hopefully!

Thank you everyone. Maybe it’s too early days. I just want to feel like a person, not the whole patient bit in my life

Thank you. I went through a meds change hence relapse. Just feel like I know my bipolar, stable with meds, change meds relapse. My meds are now changed, I’m stable so I feel like I know how this goes & feel ready for discharge. I stopped meds once after disengaging & was very very unwell, I’ve learnt that lesson big time. Just feel I can be responsible I know my bipolar & want to be trusted that I can manage it. I’ve had it long enough. But it is so recent stabilisation maybe they’re not confident, but I can feel it within myself, I know what coming out of an episode feels like that’s happened. I don’t feel like I need CMHT.
