Citalopram

Hi, I'm just about to start citalopram and I'm just looking for some support with it actually. I'm not sleeping- maybe a couple of hours a night and feel absolutely washed out. Will it be okay for me to ask for sleeping tablets with citalopram or can I take anything over-the-counter? Waiting for a call back from the GP and needing a bit of a handhold. I've got a background of post viral fatigue which is making me very anxious and tinnitus which is keeping me awake!

Are you taking it in the morning? If not, that's the problem.

I have 9 years documented mental health depression , GA ,SA and Postpartum psychosis with relapses and 3 suicide attempt since 17years old
The only time they would give them to me was when I had Postpartum psychosis and I was litarly crying and screaming that I won't go to sleep because ill die 😭
Told both of my doctors recently that I can't sleep etc and just told to try Citalopram/ up my Citalopram even though if I don't sleep properly I get PPP relapses . The upping of the dose is just making me feel more depressed and I just feel exhausted in the day 😔 Yet my partner (who I'm not being rude) just went to his doctor and said he can't sleep and had anxiety a few times and that's what they gave him 🙄

CatsBeCrazy · 13/12/2024 16:37

it really does depend on who your doctor is I think . My partner has seen his doctor for many years even before he had met me

A lot of otc sleeping tablets interact with SSRIs so they may not be suitable.

Sometimes a Piriton is a decent sleeping tablet for me.

TheOliveFinch · 13/12/2024 16:54

Citalopram can be sedating for some people so may help, if sleep is a major issue some other antidepressants are very good at helping sleep especially mirtazapine or your doctor may suggest other things to help alongside the Citalopram , some sedating antihistamines are very good to help with sleep as well but check with the GP if these would be safe to take with the Citalopram

Thanks - GP finally got back to me to say all
Ok to take zopiclone and citalopram . I never thought I'd be back here again 20 years on from taking them . Trigger has been illness and bereavement . Also have awful tinnitus atm which is keeping me awake . Need to stop thinking about it - hopefully citalopram can help with that .
@TheOliveFinch so is mirtazapine a different antidepressant then ?
The doctor surgery also told me Nytol is ok to take with citalopram and the other one my DH thought of was phenergan.

OP Mirtazapine is indeee a newer different type of antidepressant.

Phenergan is actually an antihistamine but it’s really sedating and often used in mental health.

TheOliveFinch · 13/12/2024 17:46

Mirtazapine is a different type of antidepressant, I personally didn’t get on with it for depression but it certainly made me sleep, I have used the boots sleep aid which is equivalent to Nytol in the past and that has also been helpful, hope your sleep improves soon

LWestYorks · 14/12/2024 09:33

@rubyslipperss hey! I took my first tablet of 10mg citalopram yesterday. Happy to chat through it together if you need to xx

rubyslipperss · 14/12/2024 10:22

Hi @LWestYorks yes please . Just took my first one this morning . Thank you would be good to chat to someone also doing . How was your first day ?
One of my issues is that I'm a chronic over thinker - so already looking for side effects .

Just distract yourself as much as possible as if you’re looking for side effects, you will find them. X

Do you mean it's better to take at night ? I'm pretty sure last time I took it I took it at night .

@CatsBeCrazy I'm really sorry you're having such a hard time - can you change your GP ? I know that's a lot . Have you tried anything over the counter ? Or can you go on something like the mirtazapine people are suggesting ?

MrsBrown24 · 14/12/2024 20:06

@rubyslipperss tbh I'm not any better 5 weeks in mentally but I feel like I have got to get there in the end...

I took time off work, take my tablet on a morning & just let the world sail by why I sleep or zone out.

We are all in this together , on my second tablet of diazepam too now

rubyslipperss · 15/12/2024 18:15

It's a tough old ride. I'm only two days in and wanting to back out just finding it's also difficult. I'm feeling very anxious.! Anyone got any ideas about how to get through the anxiety to begin with?

OP posts:
MrsBrown24 · 16/12/2024 11:46

@rubyslipperss I've been given diazepam along side the citalopram... and last night I felt so much better... sadly not this morning.

Spoke to dr and to keep at diazepam
And tbh it's a massive help for me x
