Anxiety and wisdom tooth removal

Evening. I'm new here.

I've always suffered anxiety but recently resorted back to going on citalopram... along with 5 weeks of taking these I've battled with my wisdom teeth biting into my cheek, which they said only way to fix this is remove it.

I've never been anxious of the dentist but right now I'm bad, I'm not scared of the pain but the fact of possibility of passing out after it's been done from all the adrenaline.

I have requested to go to hospital to have it removed but also faced with the possibility of 6 months wait time....

Anyone been in the same place as me :(

I fit mine surgically removed and honestly it was fine. I had sedation so was awake and aware but just very relaxed.

MrsBrown24 · 10/12/2024 19:58

Can I ask how long you waited for a referral for sedation please

Thank you both for your replies

I had my four back teeth pulled aged 11 completely awake - no sedation. As long as they numb them up nicely you will be fine. Modern dentists will make sure of this. I have also been on antidepressants since I was a child since major trauma at age 7. You will be scared but you can face it and conquer it. If you have the sedation that’s fine, but there’s nothing like feeling like you survived something you were scared of! Lots of love xxx

Where have you got the idea that you can “pass out from adrenaline”?! That is not a thing - particularly when having teeth removed.

Both my DDs (early 20s) have had their wisdom teeth removed in the last 12 months. The clinic they went to used local anaesthetic, so they weren't fully sedated, just "away with the fairies". If you tell the dentist about your deep anxiety they will do their utmost to reassure and relax you. You are also required to have someone with you to get you home, so you'll never be on your own. They usually allow you to remain in the clinic until you're feeling better and ready to leave. In my DDs case we left pretty soon after, and they were still both "high" when I guided them back to the car and it was only when we got home and the local had completely worn off, that the adrenaline rush ended. I hope all goes well for you OP.

You can’t pass out from adrenaline. Adrenaline is what prepares the body for action. In caveman times, it prepared us from running away from lions.

Honestly I think the more you overthink this, the more you are working yourself up. Book it in, get it done, prove to yourself that you are stronger than you think! Xx

I had a tooth removed two weeks ago. My anxiety is so bad I only leave the house for medical appointments. I had to have this as my whole face kept swelling and they were worried it would compromise my airway. Anyway, I paid for sedation. It’s bloody marvellous stuff! Go for that if you can afford it x

@Scutterbug do you mind me asking how much private sedation cost please 🙏🏼
