Hearing thoughts outside head as a voice?

I was just talking to someone & stopped but what I was about to say but didn’t, I then heard in a whispered voice said into my ear. Any idea what this is?

I do have bipolar & not well. I have had voices before but they’ve been voices that chatter between each other in my head, or other stuff, but it’s very rare. This is the first time I’ve heard a voice from outside my head, I thought the person I was talking to had said it but no.

Maybe it’s just because I’m tired & under a load of stress? Bipolar obviously not helping, but it scared me. Hoping it’s just a one off but worried. But then I heard a bee in my ear last night so I don’t know, thought maybe it was a flying thing.

Help! Any ideas what this is? Kind of feel like it’s not an hallucination as it was my thoughts? Not sure whether to say anything, because it may just be I’m tired.

It could be psychosis. If you're under a psychiatrist I would contact them as your medication may need adjusting.

You could also contact NHS option 2 for the mental health team.

Another option is to see your GP or you could phone Rethink for advice.

Thanks username358, I am in the middle of a meds change, so maybe it’s that.

I don’t think I’m psychotic, although when I when I went into an alternate reality, I had no insight, but I’m still on my mood stabiliser that bought me out of that. Maybe it’s just a few breakthrough symptoms. Guess things exist on a scale. I will let my psychiatrist know.

thank you 🙂

It’s just because I heard my thoughts, not it coming from nowhere

I would call your crisis team asap. I have bipolar too. It can be a hard time when the meds aren’t quite right or they being changed. This is a significant symptom change and I think they need to know asap.

I also have bipolar, and like the pp would suggest contacting your crisis team.

Do you reckon this could have just happened through lack of sleep?

I’ve been told that lack of sleep is the biggest risk factor for me to having another manic bipolar episode. I don’t know if that holds true for everyone with bipolar but I would again urge you to contact your crisis team. These situations are what they are there for.

Bumblebeedotty · 02/12/2024 21:56

Thank you AngryFierceClouds, I have let the crisis line know. Lack of sleep definitely affects affects me too. It’s just because I’m not sure what to make of it, not sure if it is a hallucination or not, as it was my thoughts. It’s weird

Im not sure what happened for you. I have only experienced hypomania and not full mania; so haven’t any personal experience of delusions or hallucinations. It is all a very personal experience.

Hope you’re feeling the medication change is helping you and the crisis team have been a support.

Bumblebeedotty · 03/12/2024 06:52

It is very personal, bipolar presents in such different ways, no two people have the same mix of symptoms. I get mixed states only, so get delusions but rarely hallucinations. I am hoping my care co will be in touch today as emailed yesterday. Thank you

I think it is quite common for an auditory hallucination to take the form of hearing your own thoughts as if they were spoken from outside of you.

I also think it is very common for lack of sleep to be a trigger for these sorts of experience, sometimes even in people who don't have any diagnosed disorder.

I'm glad you are talking to your team about it and I hope you manage to be a bit more rested soon xx

AngryFierceClouds · 03/12/2024 07:33

I think I have seen a second post where you mention the change in medication is stopping your antipsychotic medication and continuing with just mood stabiliser medication. I would definitely be asking for a consultant review of my medication and the impact of dropping the antipsychotic in those circumstances.

Thank you, I didn’t know that about auditory hallucinations that’s helpful thank you.

I do think lack of sleep is definitely playing a part.

Thank you AngryFierceClouds, I am going onto another mood stabiliser. My bipolar responds better to them than antipsychotics so hoping that will be ok
