Adult ADHD

I've recently wondered whether a lifetime spent being fairly sub-competent might be better understood and explained if I did have a condition like ADHD.

I've always thought some of these newer conditions were comfort for people like me and not necessarily real (no offence intended).

But I have recently started reading about this condition and it seems it might help me understand how my brain works and therefore make it potentially easier to tackle the significant difficulties I have.

I don't want to go into a lot of detail.

Are there any late-comers who can relate to this?

Thanks

Yes, diagnosed at 34. Always felt something was 'off' about me but never sure what. I think lots feel like that whether it's a diagnosis or just a state of being. I'm very high functional and very high masking. I feel like the diagnosis has helped me put words to some things I've never quite understood especially emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitivity, 'the waiting mode', paralysing indecisiveness and sensation seeking and self sabotage.

I'm kind of relearning me through a more compassionate lens.

That’s exactly what i thought.

It’s not someone like me.

Turns out, it is. My mind just doesn’t have an off switch. It’s always busy, often in multiple directions.

it’s exhausting.

Waiting for my assessment... Look up right to choose.

That's so interesting- what the best place to seek genuine diagnosis?
Thank you

Yes! My mind is NEVER off. I could be doing the most relaxing thing and my mind will be loud. Always a question, a plan, an idea, a doubt, a what if. It's like always having the radio on.

I’ve always thought that’s now everybody’s mind worked.

It seems not.

ADHD is nothing to do with being sub-competent, no. Often it's the opposite, we often excel in unexpected ways in a variety of different things. We can ge very goal oriented but may lose interest once the goal has been achieved. That's why I love exams - the 9-5, not so much.
