Sertraline and Omeprazole

I've been on Sertraline (50mg) for around 5 years and about a year in started to get silent reflux and was put on Omeprazole (20mg).

Prompted by recently being disqualified for free prescriptions I've been looking at costs etc... there are a few things I've read along the way that I now have questions about.

Should I be separating the two meds? I've read that omeprazole can inhibit the effects of sertraline. I could certainly do with a bit of a boost at the moment.

I've also seen that taking omeprazole long term is not a great idea so wondered if anyone found other ways of managing their silent reflux.

Lastly, in relation to costs, I currently have a monthly prescription. Does anyone get more tgan that in one prescription?

Tia

Hi I take both and id not heard of them counteracting
I take 150mg sertraline and 20mg omeprazole but I've recently felt I'm more anxious again ..maybe this is why.

I can't help with prescription costs as I live in Scotland but it seems so unfair you should even have to worry about the cost

I think omeprazole should be taken 2 hours before or after any other medication. I get free prescriptions but I do get 2 months worth at a time.

50mg is a low dose. If you're not feeling good on it ("could do with a boost") then speak to the GP about increasing the dose.

I don't see why you can't ask for at least the omeprazole to be on 3-monthly prescription. I get a 3-monthly prescription for sertraline but if you increase your dose they may want to keep you on 1-monthly for a while for that.

I would be cautious about longterm omeprazole.
I was prescribed it for about 8 years because I needed to take a nsaid for severe chronic pain so omeprazole is routinely prescribed in conjunction as a stomach protector.
I was worried about the nsaid but had no idea the antacid could cause significant problems.
I now have kidney stones and have only just found out that longterm antacids can cause these.
I wouldn’t take omeprazole longterm again.

If you take more than one thing a month it is worth getting a prescription prepayment certificate.

Have you tried taking sertraline with food? I couldn't take it on an empty stomach.

I think you may be right in that I need to go back to the Dr. I've been putting it off for a while.

It's worth doing. I've been on a high dose at times and it really helped.

Yes, I take it with breakfast in the morning. The silent reflux was waking coughing throughout the night.

In terms of prescription costs, a prepayment certificate would work out cheaper.

Just to add, my dentist has been really clear with me about the reflux damaging my teeth. Omeprazole will help a lot to prevent that.

She also told me to use a dry mouth rinse or spray - she thought the sertraline was causing a very dry mouth.

Hope you get sorted and feel better soon.

Hey! Yeah, you’re right to check how these two interact. Omeprazole can reduce Sertraline absorption, which might make it less effective. Some people take them a few hours apart—like Sertraline in the morning and Omeprazole later—to avoid that. Worth asking your GP if that could help.

Long-term Omeprazole isn’t great since it can mess with nutrient absorption (B12, magnesium, etc.). Some manage silent reflux by tweaking their diet—cutting caffeine, acidic foods, late-night eating. Gaviscon Advance is another option some swear by. If you haven’t tried lifestyle changes yet, they might help reduce the need for Omeprazole. On prescriptions, some doctors/pharmacies do offer more than a month’s supply, so it’s worth asking—could save you money.

By the way, I’ve been on Zoloft (Sertraline) for a long time now, and for me, it was a real turning point. Actually, I recently started ordering it from this pharmacy—world-delivery-service.com/buy-zoloft-uk.html—a friend recommended them, and honestly, it feels like it’s working even better. Probably placebo, but hey, I’m feeling great! 😆 Hope you find what works best for you!

Is the above site legitimate? My bank declined transaction and are issuing a new card.

No, you shouldn't be able to just buy antidepressants without a doctor's authorisation.

I take omeprazole on an empty stomach when I wake up in the morning. I take the ssri at night before bed. I am also on nsaids and I take them with food at about midday and at about 7. The omeprazole does its job all day every day and this is how I was advised to take it.
