Adult son with health anxiety

Hi, my 23 yr old son has awful health anxiety (and anxiety in general) which is controlling his life. He does have a condition which is easily controlled by taking one pill a day, doesn't cause any issues apart from it interacts with lots of meds so antidepressants are out of the question. His issue is with his appearance and it changes constantly. He has a scar which he was obsessed with, then a spot on his face, then some discolouration on his arms - the list continues. He constantly examines his hairline and every part of his body close up. Every lump, blemish, vein, hair is photographed and complained about. In our opinion, it's normal deviations in skin tone. occasional spots etc but for him it's a major issue. He has seen GP's who have tried to be helpful but they don't see a problem and he thinks they are idiots who don't know anything. He looks at reddit for others with these issues and wants to try different treatments but often can't take them due to interactions or because they are only available in the US. He doesn't believe consultants either despite seeing them privately. He is just obsessed. It's ruining his life and ours. He won't speak to anyone about his mental health as he tried once and they just asked him to look at some websites. He also won't book any appointments himself, I have to do it for him. He is a clever, funny lad who is doing well but this is taking over his life. He talks about suicide a lot. I have no idea where to go and I'm scared. Does anyone have any advice?

It sounds like anxiety and possible body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).There are lots of different types of anti depressant and they might not all contradict his medication.

It sounds like he could really benefit from therapy. You can look on the BACP website for someone who specialises in BDD/anxiety and call a few to see who he gels with.

Young Minds has a helpline for parents worried about the mental health of their child.

I also suggest lots of fresh air, socialising, exercise and a good diet.
