2023/24 SAD thread | Mumsnet

Hi again, I’m back for another year ☹️. I can’t see that anyone has started a SAD thread yet but today seems to be the day that it’s really kicking in...

@PamperGoals2024 oh no! It’s still lovely here and is meant to be all weekend. I had a lovely dog walk at lunch time as I was WFH again but it had gone colder by our 4pm one. It’s the dark nights that are getting me 😭.

I’m feeling really unsettled

I could bore on about it for hours but won’t 😂

just can’t settle to anything. Can’t even decide if I want food for example. Bizarre.

PamperGoals2024 · 21/09/2024 21:08

I've had a very random dinner haha.

The posts on here are making me nervous about November, I feel okay now but...

Anyway I've got my holiday booked for 13 Dec so hopefully the thought of wearing a bikini will force me into keeping the exercise up 😅

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 22/09/2024 12:46

Oh to have a holiday booked for December 😭!

The crappy weather has hit us now and I’m feeling fed up. I’m sick of spending all week working and all weekend cleaning and tidying 😭. I just sorted out all the washing and felt sad that I probably won’t wear my lovely summer clothes now until at least May.

Urgh, I’ve definitely got that oppressed feeling today! Got my SAD lamp on now for the first time and feeling much better.

I really really struggle as we enter October....the dread starts to set in. Yesterday here in London was a gorgeous day... sunny and warm and I could kid myself it's still summer. Today is so grey. I don't mind it being a bit colder but the lack of blue skies is really unbearable. I feel really low when the sky is totally grey. I am getting a sad lamp this week and looking forward to trying it. My greatest wish is to emigrate somewhere warm and sunny.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/09/2024 17:16

Hello - newbie here - realised last year that I probably have SAD - basically because, if possible, I would hibernate. I really struggle to even get up in winter - let alone do stuff.

I wandered about a lamp and if anyone could recommend a cheapish one under £40?

I take vit D anyway and have B12 injections every 3 months. It's rained here for the past 24 hours and feels so blugh!

EmeraldRoulette · 22/09/2024 17:31

Sorry everyone is struggling

I woke up with full blown anxiety this morning. All I had to do was go to mum’s and do a couple of things for her but I feel tired in that way you get when you’re really anxious and have to talk yourself down. Have spent about an hour walking in the grey.

I’m not going to use the lamp yet as I suspect it’s going to make the anxiety worse.

PamperGoals2024 · 23/09/2024 07:42

Pretty grey here top today, and on the chillier side. Hope you got through the anxiety @EmeraldRoulette and welcome newbies!

My go-to for anxiety is to eat carbs, not great! After a weekend of rubbish eats I had pizza last night with two chewy chocolate cookies.

I also spent £ on a theatre ticket for next Spring which I now slightly regret. I feel better that I'm taking DM so it will be a nice experience to remember, and It's near my birthday too so I suppose I can justify it.

lyingonthebeach · 23/09/2024 09:45

It is grey, dark and there is howling rain here. I didn't want to get out of bed. The SAD lamp is on for the first time and I've just taken super strength vit D. I feel completely down, disconnected and discombobulated. I have Xmas in the sun but that seems so far away. 😭

PamperGoals2024 · 23/09/2024 10:10

I think I forget that the change in daylight not only affects mood but also immunity. I do take a Multivitamin gummy. I've taken some preventative sambucol. I also do a daily nasal saline rinse which may or may not help bugs. I've also taken to starting the day with a piece of fruit to replace electrolytes lost overnight before having eggs later.

It's annoying as if I had been exercising since mid July I wouldn't feel like this. Now it feels such a massive struggle, but I'm hoping the weekend classes will eventually lead on to me doing 10 mins of HIIT when I wake up.

DropOfffArtiste · 23/09/2024 10:47

Used my SAD lamp and went for a run to get some fresh air/daylight. I find WFH can be very easy to feel cooped up.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 23/09/2024 11:48

Definitely need my SAD lamp in the office today, it’s hideous outside! I’m freezing, sore and starving today 🙈.

I've ordered a new daylight desk lamp for my home office. When it gets dark early but SAD lamp is not great to use in the evenings

You've inspired me to go for a walk.

EmeraldRoulette · 23/09/2024 21:11

So how did everyone's day turn out?

I suppose mine could've been worse...

Won't go on about it but it's been very up and down. Anxiety and irritability go hand in hand at this time of year - or is that just me?

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/09/2024 07:20

Mine was OK @EmeraldRoulette thanks. Using the SAD lamp in the morning definitely helped as it was pouring down. I managed a good, long (muddy) walk with the dog after work although it was still very grey.

I don’t feel irritable yet but do feel a little anxious, I’m on sertraline though so that helps! Last year, I upped my dose in November which caused a full on manic episode in about February so I’m not gonna do that this year!

Feeling really down this morning. WFH makes me feel very cooped up. I need to go for a run to clear my head.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/09/2024 08:36

@DropOfffArtiste do you work from home all the time? It nearly killed me in Covid but now I’m hybrid, it’s a nice mix of getting out and being sociable and cuddling with my dog 😂.

Yesterday stayed grim all day and my mood did not improve, even with the help of half a packet of chocolate digestives. Today, the rain has stopped but the grey sky is oppressively depressing. Like @Comedycook , I don't mind the cold if it is bright and sunny. This dismal grey is just sapping my energy and my soul. I have my tactics (SAD lamp, vits, the Xmas hol, lunches with friends etc) but I am filled with dread and anxiety at the thought of the months ahead.

DropOfffArtiste · 24/09/2024 11:21

I also work hybrid, two days a week in the office. It is usually a good balance of getting more sleep/exercise and seeing DS a bit on WFH days and going to the office for a couple of days but this week I am struggling. Fulltime WFH during covid nearly broke me.

DropOfffArtiste · 24/09/2024 11:23

Last night I was working till gone 10pm which really didn't help. i feel like I have no proper downtime. (I work a lot with the US and it isn't always like this). I will book for some restorative yoga so I properly switch off this evening.
