Link to last year’s thread

Hi again, I thought I’d start a new thread for this season of SAD 😭. It’s definitely starting to feel autumnal here 🥶.

If you’re new this year, please join us for tips to get through winter, chat and general moaning!

2023/24 SAD thread | Mumsnet

Hi again, I’m back for another year ☹️. I can’t see that anyone has started a SAD thread yet but today seems to be the day that it’s really kicking in...

It’s awful here, windy, raining and it was dark at half 3 😭. Even the dog refused his walk!

@Comedycook isn’t your coffee cold by morning??

It is! But I don't mind...I'm always making cups of coffee and forgetting about them so end up drinking them cold a lot anyway! I just need the caffeine hit!

Comedycook · 05/12/2024 20:32

Although I am thinking of buying one of those mugs which is a flask

@Imatorturedpoet that’s so horrible of her! I hope you’ve got it sorted even though having to ring up is a nightmare!

How is everyone in the storm? It’s hideous here! We’re having a Christmas market at our village hall where we volunteer today and there were meant to be outside stalls. DH spent hours yesterday trying to sort it so everyone could get inside and stall holders are moaning like mad this morning 🙈. It only costs a tenner for a stall so it’s not like a big commercial market. Sometimes I wonder why we bother volunteering as all you get it whinging!!

I can’t get going this morning (I’m not going anywhere near the hall until later this afternoon for a look round or I’ll get roped into doing something 😂)! Yesterday I had awful training on Teams in the morning at work then I thought it would be a good idea to do back to back pole classes as I had the afternoon off. Then I hosted the Christmas quiz at the hall (which I did enjoy and there was no moaning!!). Then I had to help set up the tables for today. I finally got to bed at 1am and I had definitely used up all my “spoons”!

It sounds really bad out there so I’m going to stay in as much as I can, dye my hair and do my nails with a nice Christmassy theme but I’m not sure what yet.

Absolutely no brain in

struggling with simplest tasks. Put dinner in oven and forgot to switch it on! All very familiar alas.

no sunshine broken through all week.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 14/12/2024 16:30

@EmeraldRoulette have you tried lions mane mushrooms, they’re really helping with my brain fog.

I’m really struggling with the social expectations around Christmas this year even though I love Christmas. I’ve got/ had something on last Friday, Saturday, this Wednesday, yesterday, tonight, tomorrow and Monday! Then there’s the expectation that socialising focuses around food and drinking alcohol. As an almost teetotal, anorexic, autistic, SAD person, this is a struggle!

Its soooo cold out

But got out in the blue sky today

PamperGoals2024 · 14/12/2024 18:27

Hello, haven't posted in a while. Not to make anyone jealous but I'm on my 5 day winter break. Only got 4 more days so need to make the most of it. Everything else in my life is pretty shit atm haha.

Comedycook · 15/12/2024 19:29

Don't know about anyone else but finding this week tough....it gets so dark so early. I think I've gone into hibernation mode...have had a lot of daytime naps! I'm looking forward to January

EmeraldRoulette · 15/12/2024 20:16

@Comedycook this is the worst bit

also looking forward to January though hoping for no snow!

i had a social hour today, couldn't really engage though I was very pleased to have the option

pp mentioned lions mane but I have tried so many supplements I'm reluctant to spend more again

sun came out yesterday. Was like an instant physical change!

Comedycook · 21/12/2024 19:17

Winter solstice is here!

Just think there will be a little more daylight each day now....

Hope everyone is doing ok

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 22/12/2024 01:00

@Comedycook thank god for that!

I had my pole dancing showcase tonight and it went so well!

The weather is horrendous though, I can’t sleep because of the raging wind. DS was meant to be having a flying lesson tomorrow and we were going up with him but it’s been postponed until 3rd Jan 🙁.

Hooray for winter solstice @Comedycook!

I went to the gym today and felt some endorphins. I actually enjoyed it (afterwards anyway!).

Hope everyone is doing well.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/12/2024 14:23

Happy Christmas Eve everyone! What are you all up to today?

robinsrace · 24/12/2024 21:09

Merry Christmas all!

Glad the days are now getting lighter and not darker, thank god!!

I've had a rough day but doing better now. Had to force myself to keep busy and get out as I was feeling so low and isolated stuck in the house. Christmas Day parkrun tomorrow which is the best part of the day for us. Feeling pretty frightened as Christmas is notorious for being nice and then leading me into a low depression, but hoping to try and keep busy and keep it at bay.

What are you all looking forward to?

lyingonthebeach · 25/12/2024 01:14

Happy Christmas everyone. I hope you all have a great day.

I feel good because I've been away soaking up sun. Fingers 🤞 that the feeling lasts.

Happy Christmas! Sounds lush. My 5 day sun break did the world of good. I could do with another!

Comedycook · 26/12/2024 10:10

Happy belated Christmas! Hope everyone had a good day.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 26/12/2024 18:30

We had a lovely day yesterday just the 4 of us (me, DH, DS and the dog!). We were all happy with our presents to each other and DS cooked us an amazing dinner. DS had listened to me saying I fancied some Crocs and secretly bought them for me, which was a total surprise. He’s such an amazing kid!

Today we went on a 2 hour walk and now we’re just chilling. Tomorrow will be a quiet day and then we have two parties on the 28th which will be a challenge for me! Then another party in NYE.

How is everyone else’s Christmas?

Happy new year everyone! It’s only up from here. Did everyone have a good new year eve?

OP posts:
lyingonthebeach · 01/01/2025 12:21

Well, my sunny holiday feeling lasted for just over a week. The grey, wet weather today is making me feel tired and tearful. And I don't care that we have another minute of daylight or whatever. If the so-called light is dreary and depressing, so bloody what?

Fingers crossed for blue skies and bright days ahead.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 02/01/2025 16:26

Sorry to hear that @lyingonthebeach. between Christmas and new year was so wet and miserable but we’ve had 2 nice, sunny days to start the new year which has made me feel more positive. And for those who remember from last year, DH managed to survive the village NYE party without being assaulted this year!!

Keeping everything crossed tomorrow will be as nice and sunny as DS has his first flying lesson and it’s already had to be postponed twice 🤞.

Definitely suffering with SAD, anyone got a sunrise alarm clock?

lyingonthebeach · 03/01/2025 11:27

@Idratherbepaddleboarding The lovely bright weather today and yesterday makes a difference. I can deal with the cold if I can see blue sky.

Me too. We managed to get a break in the rain today at the exact time of DS’s flying lesson 🎉. Here’s a view of Lake Windermere from the air 🥰.
