Should I increase citalopram?

Hi everyone. I’ve been on 30mg for about 5 months. I’m definitely in a better place ( had a breakdown in Dec) but I’m finding I only get 2 good weeks followed by a blip which lasts around 4 days. I’m wondering if 40mg would be better? Or should I stick it out on 30mgs? Thank xx

I’m glad you’re feeling better :) I do think you should talk to your GP about this though, not take advice here on medication x

Yes I will. It just feels like 2 steps forward, 1 back. Right now I’m feeling really low, when just a few days ago I felt totally myself. x

Ive been on citalopram for nearly 2 years, 20mg, now down to 10. I feel the same but have worked out mine is hormonal, around the time my period is due and when I ovulate. Having worked it out makes it easier to manage as I know it's hormonal, I feel like shit, but it will pass.

I’m wondering the same… for me, because of the breakdown I don’t seem to be able to accept it’s hormonal and freak out. I’m on day 5 of my period today and feeling really hopeless…

Omg I get this with citalopram! Mine is linked to just after I ovulate, when my estrogen drops I feel really low. I was wondering how to manage it but am trying positive thinking. I did find eating more carbs helped but I'm watching my weight :( Have been watching comedy and drinking smoothies. Was thinking of putting some soothing music on.

It's ironic because mood drops are exactly the reason I went on it. What it's done is make the rest of the month better and maybe bought the lowest points up slightly. It's still a bit torturous though. I've asked the GP for blood tests for my hormones although I can't have HRT. Walking and exercise does seem to help - maybe I need to try to do more of these in the dips.

I also find foods containing phytoestrogens, like houmous and sugarsnaps, and other mood boosting food like guacamole, crunchy yellow pepper etc help in the dips. Failing that pizza and chocolate.

@inthewoods4 I spoke to a counsellor today and had a cry and they were saying look at how far I have come and getting to a better place is in sight even if am not quite there yet. Hopefully there is something in there that can help you too.

You sound just like me! It’s so hard to pull yourself out of that dark place, even though I know I’ve made progress. I am terrible for googling and torturing myself looking at all the ‘happy people’ on social media and wondering why I’m not like them. I think I’m going to up to 40mg and see if it takes the edge off x
