Overcoming Cardiophobia

Hi, has anyone been able to overcome their Cardiophobia?

I'm interested in any new / experienced techniques anyone has used that has enabled them to overcome this phobia.

I have tried counselling, meditation, exposure therapy etc all of which has helped but I would like to try other techniques to see if I can "cure" myself of this.

All types of phobias respond very well to hypnotherapy/remedial hypnosis. Why? Because you weren't born with this specific fear so your learnt it at some point in your life and anything the mind can learn, it can unlearn.

Can you remember when and why it started?

I started googling symptoms of various illnesses a few years ago as I was worried about my health as I wasn't taking care of myself properly. I then had a panic attack which felt like a heart attack and ever since I have had Cardiophobia / health anxiety. I can only assume it is PTSD from the panic attack, I do have some characteristics of OCD of a safety behavioural element so maybe it's all connected.

Have a look at this video on panic attacks, it will help you understand how they happen, why they are not dangerous (even though they feel horrible) and what you can do to minimise them;

Thanks, I haven't had a panic attack since (this was almost 2 years ago) I just have intrusive thoughts around there being something wrong with my heart. I just want to know how to break the cycle.

Intrusive/obsessive thoughts are classed as OCD if they cause you distress or have an impact on the quality of your life.
Can you tell yourself every time you have these thoughts that it's just your brain playing tricks on you and that there is nothing wrong with your heart, it's just your anxiety making you think it is. This is how I overcame my intrusive thoughts and psychosomatic symptoms.

Hi, yes I can most of the time but some days I just can't shake it off, I guess I want to get to a point where I don't have any intrusive thoughts and just want to be able to live normally as I did before the panic attack.

EMDR for OCD was very helpful to me. It brought me a lot of distress and the intrusive thoughts were constant (about my child’s safety). I still have the thoughts but I’m able to tell myself it’s the OCD, to stop the spiral and to live a normal ish life.
I have other stuff dragging me down too, though .
