Best anti depressant for sleep?

time2changeCharlieBrown · 19/06/2024 20:31

I have an anxiety disorder general day anxiety ocd and night anxiety with panic attacks ocd
my gp recommended a ssri but I tried two and side effects were horrendous and insomnia worse
they said mirtazapine could be good however it could cause weight gain and I’ve just worked so hard to lose two stone after a year so I’m a bit worried about that
is there any other anti depressants that anyone can recommend maybe for sleep and anxiety

I take trazodone. It has a sedative effect that works pretty well for me (I also take a couple of other meds but trazodone is the main antidepressant/antianxiety med I take)

I take mirtrazapine and have for over 2 years. It makes you hungrier which is where the weight gain could come from but I’ve lost 3 stone in the 2 years I’ve been on it with slimming world.

Thank you I have heard if this is it available in the uk? Did you have any side effects I might ask my gp about this one

that’s good to know! Well done on the weight loss good to know the drug doesn’t stop it if you try hard enough!
can you be on Mirtazapin long term? Do the sleep side effects ware off?

@time2changeCharlieBrown I get it prescribed by a private psychiatrist but my GP has previously said that it's one of his favoured anti-depressants so I probably could have got it on the NHS albeit I'm not sure what the actual prescribing guidelines are and if it can be prescribed by a GP without involvement of a psychiatrist.

I don't get any side effects really. It makes me a bit groggy in the morning if I take it too late and I've not been able to go up to the max dose for the same reason but nothing physically

Mirtazapine is a wonder drug for sleep. I also take HRT and citalopram 👌 perfect cocktail

applebutteralmond · 19/06/2024 20:46

My mil is on mirtazapine and while it did help with her sleep she has gained a huge amount of weight while on it over the past year, she is now slowly losing weight while still on the medication.

I’ve been on Quetiapine for anxiety but more specifically helping me sleep and it’s been a game changer. I just take a low dose at night and it makes me feel sleepy and can switch off easily and I get a good long sleep. I don’t feel groggy in the morning and can get up with 3 young children and crack on with the day. The only downside I’m finding is now coming off it, I’m getting nausea when I don’t take it in this weaning process but apparently this is temporary and you don’t have to come off it if you don’t want, it’s safe for long term use

clomipramine , but it’s an old style tricyclic so not first in line to be prescribed.

I read that as best anti-depressant for sheep 😂

I was prescribed mirtazapine as a sleep aid more than a anti depressant. I have been on it nearly a year without side effects or weight gain. Its really helped my insomnia. I take half a tablet at 8.30pm for a 10pm bedtime and wake up feeling great!

PixellatedPixie · 19/06/2024 21:00

I have taken sertraline for years and have read many articles about it. My take is that it’s the just widely prescribed SSRI and I think it helps hugely with sleep while having the least side effects of any.

Greyingmumto3 · 19/06/2024 22:42

I had mirtazapine last year but only lasted 2 weeks on it as I felt so groggy on it .was great for sleep but I felt drugged even on a low dose
now on sertraline and sleep great with no side effects. Once my anxiety was under control my sleep has been back to normal

Thank you all
