Morning gloom/feeling of dread when wake up

I’ve recently started waking up in the morning with a horrible feeling of dread. It’s better if I get up quickly rather than staying in bed too long and usually eases once I’m up and about and had my morning tea.

I also sometimes have a horrible feeling of sadness or gloom in the mornings and can find it quite hard to get going. I have no reason to be feeling this way, nothing bad going on in my life and I have a lot to be thankful for so can’t get my head around why I feel like this. Could it be some kind of vitamin deficiency? Again the gloom does subside eventually and I go on to enjoy my day. It’s just such a horrible feeling! Does anyone else experience similar and have any tips of how to combat this?

I posted this on another thread recently. I think it's to do with cortisol, a stress hormone. So anything you can do to reduce stress generally would help. It can be linked to low estrogen, so if you're in perimenopause that might explain it. Magnesium might help.

I am lurking as I feel this
I need to make so many changes to my life but am struggling

I have this now. I'm in my late 60s so wondering if it's age-related. The mention of lack of oestrogen would fit that.

@TreesWelliesKnees that’s really helpful thanks! I’ve heard it could be to do with excess cortisol. I am struggling to potty train my DS at the moment (another story!) so that could be causing more stress. I’m in my mid 30’s so hoping it not perimenopause! Could it possibly be caused by the contraceptive pill I’m on too? As I know these mess with your hormone/estrogen levels.

@whatjobcanido so sorry you’re feeling like this too. It’s a horrible feeling and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Big hugs

Many years ago I had this problem so I used the start of 6musics breakfast programme as my 7 am alarm, as they always played lively upbeat music at that time. It really helped stop the dismal thoughts before they could start. Maybe you could find something similar that works for you.

You still need to find the cause and treat that, though.

Yes. I used to wake up to the today prog on r4! not any more!!

It could be due to the contraceptive pill - you might need a different type. It could also be life with a toddler? With small children it's generally not a gentle easing in to the day - it's ramped up right from the start. Are you getting enough sleep? Mine are older now but I do school runs, work etc. To cope with it I get up half an hour before everyone else and have a cup of tea with the radio on, but that means I have to go to bed by ten!

Get your bloods done. I had this. It progressed to anxiety heart palpitations. Folic acid was basically zero

Blackcats7 · 22/05/2024 11:23

This is often a symptom of severe depression. I have felt so low that I was upset I had woken up in the morning and did everything I could to sleep as much of the time as possible. It is a horrible way to live.

Are you getting enough sleep? Eating well? Getting sunshine and exercise? Getting enough vitamins and iron? Have your blood tested.
See your doctor OP. Take time to take care of yourself. ;)
