I have violent images, urge's to but people when out never acted on this. I went to visit a horse then had thoughts that I had made her unwell and she was going to die. It’s constant and so horrible. Grateful for any advice

Intrusive thoughts, can be common with multiple personality disorders, anxiety and many other mental health conditions, have you spoken to a professional about them? Help is available

Wow - that's quite a leap to multiple personality disorders.

Intrusive thoughts are the thoughts or ideas that scare us by their nature, and have us wondering if we are a bad person or are going mad in some way. The simple explanation as to why they occur is that our mind is constantly coming up with hundreds, maybe thousands of possible options in every situation. Some neurologists even theorise that intrusive thoughts are our mind practising the job of recognising the difference between the things we want to do and the things we don't - by testing out the options. Normally this happens without us even being aware but if we focus on them we give them far more importance than they deserve.

Think of it this way;

Before we go to the cinema we need to decide which film we want to see. To do this we might view a few trailers. There will inevitably be some we want to see and very probably a far greater number that we don’t. In the same way, our mind has to contemplate certain actions before it can decide whether or not to take those actions. We think about leaping off the building because we need to understand the consequences of doing that so we know to stay away from the edge. When it comes to intrusive thoughts we can simply think of them as trailers for films we have no desire to see.

The fact that you absolutely know that you couldn't hurt the horse tells you that your thoughts aren't going to come true so you can safely ignore them.

They are intrusive thoughts. Totally normal. Everyone has them. They don’t mean you are capable of or want to do the things you have thought of.

when they pop into your head just acknowledge the thought and then brush thought away… you can develop your own technique for this… try different things until you find something that works. Some people say “ it’s just a thought” some people say “ i could never do that” I have developed a very personal one involving a strange creature with a massive water pistol that shoots the image away. Works a treat.

if you find you struggle to manage look online for CBT techniques for intrusive thoughts or refer yourself to your local primary care talking therapy.
