Heavy palpitations in the evening..

It starts around 9pm and my chest tightens and I feel heavy palpitations. I am struggling with feeling low right now. My mum is elderly and has heart failure, I know I worry about her. I lost my dad a couple of years ago, that was hard. I’m married but we’ve no other family apart from our daughter. She has ASD ADHD and I struggle with her diagnosis.
Any advice, thanks Noviie

I find magnesium really helps my palpitations, they are less frequent and less thunderous. They are linked to my cycle as well, I get them much worse around ovulation and the 2nd half of my cycle. Could this be a cause for you?

Can I ask which type you take as I suffer with palpitations too but nothing seems to help. Even beta blockers?!

How much caffeine do you drink? And how late in the day? What do you do in the evenings to relax?

Noviie · 25/04/2024 21:47

I’m in my mid 50s so it won’t be that. Thunderous describes them very well though. I’m not sure I’ll be able to sleep feeling like this but if I sit on my tablet it still struggle. I feel so washed out with them.

@driedapricots101 I just take a basic magnesium supplement from boots. I was also quite anaemic and after taking iron for a few months I have seen a decrease in them, more around certain times of the month but I do have days at a time without any. I was having 20 episodes a day, and having whole days where I was just thundering before. Hrt had helped as well.

I drink two cups of coffee but only before lunchtime. Evenings I watch TV.

I also find when I eat a lot of bread and weirdly, porridge oats, I get them.

it’s horrible because they are usually harmless and therefore gp is never that bothered by them, but to the sufferer they are exhausting and horrible. There’s so many things that aggravate them/ dehydration, tiredness, fighting off a virus… everything.

Have you had your blood checked recently? Anaemia can cause palpitations.

driedapricots101 · 25/04/2024 23:08

@thenewaveragebear1983 same.. I have had them daily for 2yrs. Heart all checked.. fine. It's exhausting. Get at night and when I wake up - they wake me up in fact. Mostly little flutters in between. Can't stop the coffee - my only vice! Actually if I have a couple drinks that eases them funnily enough!

driedapricots101 · 25/04/2024 23:11

@Noviie it really sounds like yours are stress related. You've a lot on your plate. Sometimes it's only when we're 'still' we feel the impact. Maybe look into some holistic stuff- breath work, meditation.. that did help be a bit even tho I still can't switch off & do it properly! I liked the breathe app. Take care x

The two cups of coffee before lunchtime will definitely do that to you - I've had to give up coffee and sometimes drink decaf to stop palpitations. I used to be able to drink loads. Menopause and caffeine make a terrible combination.

LuckyCharmz · 25/04/2024 23:39

palpitations can be a meno symptom, I started having them in the evening, probably early 50’s, racing away madly, quite uncomfortable. Stopped thankfully as soon as I started hrt.

Pigeonqueen · 25/04/2024 23:45

HRT completely sorted them out for me. In your 50s it’s almost certainly menopause related. I went on HRT aged 37 due to early menopause related to autoimmune issues.

driedapricots101 · 26/04/2024 20:49

I'm on hrt.. makes no difference to my heart palpitations. But apparently all other tests are clear so must be hormonal!
