Mental health

School Street Exemption

My DH suffers from mental health (MADD). Our children’s school is becoming a school street which means we cannot drive down there between the hours of 8am-9:30am & 2:30pm - 4pm.

As me, DH & mum share the pick up and drop offs this will effect us severely.

Im okay to walk to/from school, however due to DH mental health his anxiety doesn’t allow him to walk & finds it easier for his mind to take the car. He also has this in place for going to/from work which is funded by ATW.

My mum has a blue badge due to physical disabilities which impacts her walking.

Although we personally don’t have a blue badge, we do have a motorbility vehicle.

Can anyone advise if you think we would be able to get an exemption? Any advice on how to write this up to the local council?

many thanks

Are you certain that you won't be allowed to use your car in these times? Residents are allowed in and out in our school street, just no one else. The temporary gate is manned by school staff.

Forget the school run for a moment; what if there was an emergency or last minute change of plan or need to go out? Or indeed, as in your case, a medical reason for needing to use the car at a particular time?

I can't see that the council can say no to you really, if you ask. But if they do, you might have to leave the car in the next road when you know you're going to want to use it at school time.

Blue badge holders can get an exemption - you need to apply to the council (Google 'apply for school street exemption' and the name of your council) Your DH won't qualify as blue badge is the only exemption as far as I know so will need to park the next street along and walk a short distance.

Ah is it you want your mum and husband to be able to drop them at the door?
How old are dc? Can neither walk any distance at all?

Yes sometimes I’m not available and either of them would need to do the pick/drop off. They are too young to walk to school 2,4,8.

Its not an issue when I drop them but for them it’s too difficult as DH suffers from MADD & mum has sever arthritis in her knees so has a blue badge for this.

im really struggling as this is going to cause major issue for drop & pick ups if I can’t get a exemption for them.
