Anyone who has been diagnosed with autism as an adult?

I really think I am autistic. I am interested to speak with others who have made this a realisation as adult although I realise I cannot diagnose myself. I wonder if I approach a gp what would they even do? I don't think I need support but I think I could also have adhd and it does impact my work so there could be something I could do to address this.

That makes sense pink puppy.
I left home bought a house and soon after my ED got a hold and I had a nervous breakdown.
Similar when DC were born.
Now gone through menopause and feel like I'm either hyper or in my shell.
My Anxiety has been so bad travel has been a no no for yrs.
One point i couldn't cross the road to my workplace.
Maybe mine is just panic disorder.I manage my thoughts through talking a lot.
I talk out loud to myself and warn others that I do.

@Bluefell Doesn't sound mild to me. Hopefully you're experience is not typical of the medical profession in diagnosing autism.

@AceofPentacles I have definitely had relationships affected in the past but it definitely affects my work now.

I would definitely say it is "mild" for me but I don't think this should discount it. If I cannot get a diagnosis for whatever reason so be it but I think it makes sense for me to explore this.

Thanks for the recommendations.

It IS mild though. I have postgraduate qualifications, I drive a car, I have a child. I can cook and do laundry, wash myself and take medication. Yes I have autism, I stim and talk to myself and struggle with social behaviours. But it’s mild because I am functional. Any milder and I wouldn’t have got a diagnosis. Just to give you an idea where a professional has drawn that line between “quirky because I’m introverted and I must have my favourite cup” vs “autistic”.

@BluefellIs mild autism defined? I don't think I'm suggesting my autism is anything less than mild (if I even am autistic) but it's a shame if people feel they aren't entitled to a diagnosis because they don't think it's warranted. Like I said hopefully your experience with the professionals is not typical if they have made you feel that way.

@Bluefell What I am saying that is "a professional" and hopefully not representative of the profession as a whole hence it is useful to hear from multiple people.

Both my daughters just been diagnosed ASD/ ADHD ..age 40 and 32.. their sons have it.. easier to see in boys.. back then when they were little it wasn't mentioned as much and no available information.
When they got into their teens and young adulthood it was seen as mental health problems.. but because it's genetic they decided to get a diagnosis.. it's taken two years... loads of tests/ talking. I was asked millions of questions too from their birth until now.
It's been a relief and an explanation..
I'm probably the same... but at 66 I'm not going for a diagnosis..

Thanks for sharing @PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance

That's really interesting. I think my mum may have ASD too. It's actually quite obvious now that I have realised it. If anyone met her they would realise she doesn't behave "normally". Unlike me she doesn't mask as well or hasn't learned the social stuff as she has gotten older as I feel I have or maybe she just doesn't mask with us.

We have sons and so I am conscious of watching out for it in him but grateful if he is affected it must be mild.
