Hi

I suffer from regular anxiety/agrophobia and its been getting worse lately. I have spoken to the doctors who are doing blood tests.

I also spoke to them regarding an upcoming flight and they normally prescribe diazepam. They have said they won't prescribe me it anymore as its not policy and have prescribed promethazine.

Does this work? I have googled it and it says its an antihistamine!

Many thanks x

It makes you quite sleepy.

Hi @busybusy10 I was originally prescribed this recently for nausea associated with my anti depressants (which I’ve now changed as side effects were horrible!) but my psychiatrist encouraged me to keep taking them as she said they have a calming effect and would help my anxiety! I have 25mg and can take up to 4 a day. I tend to take one in the morning when I wake up in a panic and another a few hours before I go to bed. I think they do help especially with sleep, and if I’m really anxious I take one and it does seem to take the edge off. But yes they do make u a little drowsy and a bit dizzy when I stand up but I also have low blood pressure so that could be why too!

id definitely give them a go xx

I believe in small doses it is an antihistamine and in larger doses an antipsychotic. My ds5 has been prescribed it to help with sleep, though we use it only rarely as he can be groggy and a bit grumpy the next day. When we were going on our last abroad holiday the GP recommended giving it shortly before boarding the flight. We did and he slept most of the way there.

@LettersOfTheAlphabet ive never heard of it being used as an antipsychotic.

@busybusy10
it’s definitely used for nausea/sickness as I was prescribed it in pregnancy. And if taken at the right time has a sedative effect. I take 25mg at tea time but others find it kicks in within 30 mins. I’ve always been able to wake throughout the night if kids needed me so definitely doesn’t Knock me out out: GP also said to take an Extra one as needed for anxiety as it has a calming effect. I’ve taken them for 15 years and I’ve no intention of stopping whereas diazepam is 10 days max at my surgery.

Hope that helps! I would definitely take one for the flight. Try and get them prescribed though as they’ve gone up to crazy prices otc.

My dd takes 2 a night for sleeping for ADHD. She seems ok on it. Really groggy next morning though.
