Long term Prozac what next

looking for advice…. I’ve been on Prozac for around 10 years and it’s been anmazing. However it seems to have stopped working. Tried upping the dose and 6 weeks later still struggling. Doc has prescribed an AD in the same class (sertraline). Has anyone had success trying another ssri after one has popped out? Any docs out there for second opinion? Or anyone had experience of one AD pooping out?

I move ADs every few years as they often seem to be less effective after a while. Sometimes I add in new meds as well to help them work better. I think it's not unusual. Wishing you well. Sertraline worked very well for me.

so you think another Ssri will work? Did something stop working for you and then tried a something new in the same class?

Hello!

A bit like you, I have been on Prozac now since I was 17, so 17 years.

It became less effective after around 8 years, so dose was increased to maximum - 60mg. Helped for a few years.

Then became less effective again. It was deemed too risky for me to change to another SSRI so my consultant suggested augmentation with aripiprazole (tried initially but didn't help) and then quetiapine (helped massively!).

Quetiapine (an antipsychotic) has been brilliant and really helped me - helped stabilise my moods and help the overarching anxiety and ocd. Not sure if it can be prescribed by a gp though.

Not sure if that helps but you are not alone!

It's definitely worth trying. SSRIs are some of the most well-tolerated and effective ADs. I've had some that didn't work and others that worked very well.

Have you had success with an ssri when when has stopped working so well?

Have you stuck with ssris?

I am not in on SSRIs at the moment. I switched to trazodone to help with sleep plus I take Lamotrigine alongside it.

I’m just really scared of changing meds when fluoxetine had worked so well for so long. Will sertraline work now? Would love to hear anyone’s similar experience

Prozac gradually became less effective for me after 20 years, so recently switched to escitalopram, the escitalopram started working very quickly.

Sophfj123 · 17/02/2024 14:45

That is very reassuring for me!! Thank you. Hoping I will have success with another ssri.
@DiamanteFan how long have you been taking escitalopram? Did you have to taper off the fluoxetine?

Has anyone else had experience of one ssri being less effective over time and switching to a different ssri working?
