My Dr prescribed me the meds yesterday at 10mg and said I could take 3 a day for anxiety.
They are working a bit but not completely, I'm still getting that adrenaline rush, all be it only slightly, so,
My question is,
Should I increase the dose? (This will mean I'll run out and I need to see him to get more. I don't want to look, to him, as if I've been eating them like sweets
Do they build up in your system? Maybe I haven't given them long enough?
What dosage are you all on for anxiety?

If you only got the tablets yesterday they won't be giving you the full effect yet. Definitely don't take any more than you've been told to take. Keep taking the correct dose and speak to your Dr in a couple of weeks if you're not feeling any better.

Pibolar · 25/01/2024 17:06

3x40 per day. You need to give them a chance to make a difference, then you could ask whoever prescribed them to up them if you feel they’re still not working. I find the key thing is getting the timings right, this helps most of all.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 25/01/2024 17:25

@Pibolar thanks, do you space then evenly through the day?

WhamBamThankU · 25/01/2024 17:26

Yeah you need to give them a week or so to build up. My dose is now 4 x 40mg a day if needed, but generally I'll have 2 or 3 doses.

gamerchick · 25/01/2024 17:28

I started off on 40mg. They're ok to increase if you need to. No idea why gps start on 10. 10s a wank dose for anxiety at first

Enigma52 · 25/01/2024 17:29

Will be following this thread. Im also needing some anti anxiety meds for menopause and cancer diagnosis. I want to avoid anti depressants, so was thinking of propranolol. However, i have taken it previously ( 40mg) 3 times daily and it didn't do much at the time?

twiddlingthumbs69 · 25/01/2024 17:52

Blimey! Looks like I'm on a piddling little amount! I've taken another one now, so that's 30mg today. I feel a bit better but wouldn't like to have to drive right now

I always assumed they just slowed your heart down. As far as anything else I’ve never found them hugely beneficial for anxiety, I still get anxiety, I just don’t get the racing heart anymore. They are definitely only for the physical effects of anxiety and they do absolutely nothing for the mental side, they don’t contain anything that would do that like an anti-depressant for example. I’ve tried most of those too 😂 currently on venlafaxine and mirtazapine.

Enigma52 · 25/01/2024 17:59

@MessyTess how do you find venlafaxine? Any good ? 😊

MessyTess · 25/01/2024 18:00

Oh and I was started on 40x3 of propranolol…my body wouldn’t even register 10mg so that’s a really low dose

twiddlingthumbs69 · 25/01/2024 18:01

@MessyTess thanks. I've been on citalopram for years at 20mg so he's advised to go up to 40mg. My anxiety is caused by a specific event but, it's been going on for so long now I'm beginning to worry that once the trigger is sorted, the anxiety will have bedded in and turn into GAD

twiddlingthumbs69 · 25/01/2024 18:03

Oh and Dr has put on my notes that I presented with "minor" anxiety!!!!
MINOR!!!! Ffs, I was sobbing/shaking and at the end of my tether
He obvs didn't get it!!

In my experience propranolol only takes away a certain amount of the physical symptoms of anxiety- it's not as good as an SSRI for managing things but it's much better in that it doesn't alter the way you feel long term. I really feel like my brain hasn't recovered from taking citalopram- I never experience real joy or sadness anymore

MessyTess · 25/01/2024 18:07

I found them fine, I’ve only been on 75mg for around 6 weeks after around 5 years on 120mg of Duloxetine. I LOVED Duloxetine, it was amazing until it just stopped working and my depression came back with a vengeance. But that has been my most successful antidepressant in 15 years of them. The only thing I’ve struggled with is the night sweats, I wake up drenched most mornings. I don’t know if it’s because I’m almost 40 or whether it’s these tablets. I do feel like they are really helping though and no other side effects.

Beargrumps22 · 25/01/2024 18:08

I have BPD PTSD anxiety and depression, I take venlafaxine propranolol and pregabalin keeps the panics at bay

BodyKeepingScore · 25/01/2024 18:10

I'm on 80mg slow release per day. I find it's effective for me at that dose and can feel a real difference In the physical symptoms of my anxiety.

They shouldn't make you drowsy or sedated. They aren't from the same family as things like benzodiazepines etc.

MessyTess · 25/01/2024 18:16

I have GAD as well as depression (that seems to be resistant to everything) I really do feel like Duloxetine was a game changer for me when I first started it for GAD, I really wish I could go back to those first few years on it. It’s not for everyone, I know many people struggle on it but I have nothing but good things to say about it.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 25/01/2024 18:38

@BodyKeepingScore it might not be them making me drowsy. I'm so fed up with all this I think I'm running on nervous energy so that's probably making me tired

OP posts:
Pibolar · 25/01/2024 19:02

@twiddlingthumbs69 no not always. If I’m going to be in a situation I know will heighten my anxiety i will take one before hand. And for example if I have one of these situations later in the day, I will save one till later

They're prescribed for driving tests sometimes. They don't make you feel drowsy. Finding yourself not running on adrenaline might like.

MrsLeonFarrell · 25/01/2024 20:27

They can make you drowsy for the first couple of weeks until you get used to them. I think it's in the leaflet? Anything like this takes time to work, a few weeks at least. Don't raise the dose without talking to a medical professional.
