Sleeping tablets with Sertraline?

Does anybody take sleeping tablets as well as Sertraline and if so, which one?

Family member has been taking 100mg Sertraline for ages (in the mornings) and always takes hours to fall asleep. This means they also wake up really late. Worth trying Nytol or something similar?

Talk to the pharmacist. They will have encyclopaedic knowledge and be able to do a full assessment of existing conditions, medications, contra-indications.

Your relative might be told to go to the GP for a medication review because it could be the sertraline stopping them sleeping at which point diphenhydramine (Nytol etc) will give them a headache and not do much else.

Also, they're only for short term use and carry an increased risk of dementia in later life. Potentially your relative might need a prescription for something to help them sleep that's suitable for longer term use or stronger.

What is only for short term use? I take 25mg of sertraline and am preparing to up to 50mg but the insomnia is killing me, 5 days in the last 9 days of nighttime waking.

I've been taking 50mg Sertraline for a few years now and I wouldn't say I've experienced insomnia, I've developed poor sleeping patterns recently because of recently becoming a mum and drinking too much coffee during the day though. Are you sure it's definitely the Sertraline causing it?

Take the sertraline in the evening then. Also, they’ll have to get out of bed in the morning in order to establish a decent sleep routine again. Is this a young man?

mrsbyers · 25/01/2024 14:26

I take my Sertraline just before bed to avoid this

Yes it's a young man. I thought it was recommended to take sertraline in the morning if you have sleep problems?

Insomnia was appalling for me when I first went on it, often didn't get to sleep until 4-5am. My Dr prescribed me diphenhydramine, which I believe you can also get OTC. It's an antihistamine with sedative effects so makes you super sleepy. Until I was prescribed that I was using Stugeron which had the same basic effect. Ask the pharmacist about anything that induces drowsiness, they'll know what'll be best for him.

The insomnia does fade eventually for most people as their bodies get used to the drug, so don't despair, he should be back to a normal sleeping pattern eventually (and you're right that taking the Sertraline in the morning will be the first thing a Dr would recommend so he should keep doing that)

lumpfy · 25/01/2024 14:44

Diphenhydramine is Nytol isn't it?

I don't think his insomnia is going to fade - it's been years now & he tries all the suggested "sleep hygiene" things with no effect.

I'm taking 50 mg of Sertraline since Oct 2022 and it's affecting my sleep too.
I'm also having disturbing dreams every night, so much so I dread going to sleep.

I don't really want to change medication as I feel they're doing a good job with my depression.

To the poster up thread that mentioned the increased risk of dementia, is this comment for Sertraline or the sleeping medication?

MonsteraMama · 25/01/2024 15:32

Oh bless him, it might be time to try a different antidepressant then? I've heard good things about Citalopram from friends who had bad side effects from Sertraline

Blueeyedmale · 25/01/2024 15:35

I take 100 mg of sertraline in the morning and 15mg of mirtazapine at night to help me sleep

CatamaranViper · 25/01/2024 15:39

I can't for the life of me remember what it was, but I spoke to my Dr about sleep issues just after I started on sertraline and was put on some tablets that were predominantly strong antihistamines that caused drowsiness. I took one about an hour before bedtime and I would fall asleep incredibly quickly and stay asleep all night (my problem was constant waking). The only problem was it made me feel more zombie like in the mornings so I was drinking more coffee than I had before which then made my anxiety worse and so on a so forth.

Dr told me to only take them when I really needed them.

I'm about 4 years into sertraline now (dosage between 50 and 100) and I now take the odd Nytol of I'm having a bad run of disturbed nights.

Hi
Please can i have some recommendations regarding sertraline?its worth to try for severy insomnia and anxiety? I was on mirtrazapin but its not working anymore and i start having some physical pain with the urge to move constantly and also the anxiety of being home alone. Did anyone experience this kind of side effects? I don't feel supported by my GP she just prescribes antidepressants like its paracetamol, doesn't consider the side effects. The mirtrazapin stop working after i had parathyroidectomy surgery and i'm quite confused feels the world is falling apart. Anyone else been through this? Sleep hygiene, meditation, counseling and nothing helps..

My doctor prescribed gapapentin for long term use. I stopped using it shortly after as I'm trying to avoid prescription meds best I can.

Have you looked at upping Iron and Magnesium, that's helped me.
