Anxiety, Dr tomorrow

Hi, I'm going through a period of high anxiety regarding my husbands health. It's been going on since NYD and I'm getting worse.
I need something to calm me down. Tried all the breathing exercises etc but they're not working.
I have a Dr appointment in the morning, do you think they will prescribe me something?
I'm at my wits end, permanent adrenaline rushing through me.
I'm not usually one to be particularly anxious but this has really got to me!
Presumably because there's nothing I can do to help him.
Any advice on what to say to Dr?

Just be completely honest with your Dr. Your feelings, how long it’s been happening etc. They will most likely prescribe you Propranolol. I’m on this now and it takes my physical anxiety symptoms away. Good luck!

@Friedseasalt thank you for replying. Just looked up the medication, that sounds like exactly what I need. Do you get any side effects at all? I really really hope his is sympathetic and prescribes me something. I'm not sure how much longer I can go on tbh

Is it possible that peri-menopause could be a factor with your anxiety? It can come on very suddenly and very strongly.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 14:30

@Aquamarine1029 no. I went through that 20 years ago, it's definitely the worry of DH health and not being able to get any answers from the NHS

Write it all down..
Typical day.
When it's worse.
What makes it worse.
How you feel.
Heart beating fast?
Breathing problems?
Dizziness?
Not thinking straight ( brain fog)?
Trouble concentrating?
Sleep problems?.
Hard to make decisions?
Restlessness?
All these are related to anxiety .
Good luck..
And sending healing thoughts to you and your husband.

@Moier thank you x

I think I'm worrying about waking up tomorrow and feeling ok (which I do to begin with). Going to see the dr and him thinking I'm either making it up/not that bad. He's not the best dr at the Practise. A bit curt and dismissive but he's the only one available for weeks.

No worries. Anxiety is such a horrible thing! I don’t get any side effects at all. I take one in the morning to set me straight for the day, sometimes 2 if I feel panicky before bed. You can take up to 3 a day, so can also use them as of when you need. For example if DH was going into hospital etc.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 17:11

@Friedseasalt they sound great. I'm wondering if I should go in and ask him for those or whether that would get his back up? I suppose I could see what/if he prescribes and then ask about them? I'm getting in a state about this now! Grrrrr

If you feel like your symptoms are really physical I would def mention at the start of the appointment! There’s no harm and the GP will tell you if they agree, I’m sure they will!

ExtremelyJoyous · 23/01/2024 18:26

I hope you get on ok - as others have said just say what you have said here.

Propranolol is seriously amazing, it made such a difference when my anxiety was sky high!

Eyesopenwideawake · 23/01/2024 18:35

What happened on NYD to start this off?

Have you and your husband taken all the prudent steps in the worst case scenario - wills, PoA, etc?

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 19:08

@Eyesopenwideawake I don't really want to go into specifics. Enough to say it's causing serious mental distress for us both. No, we haven't gone down the Wills Etc route. It's bad enough trying to get our mental health back on track

I understand. Regaining control over a situation is the first step, so hopefully the doctor will be able to start that process.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 21:30

@Eyesopenwideawake I really hope so 🙏

Propranolol are good for lowering heat rates and physical anxiety symptoms. You may need an SSRI to calm the looping thoughts and fears.

Friedseasalt · 24/01/2024 18:27

How did you get on @twiddlingthumbs69 ?

twiddlingthumbs69 · 24/01/2024 18:39

@Friedseasalt he prescribed me a short course of 10mg Propranolol along with sleeping pills (which I won't take). I've taken two tablets so far and they've definitely calmed me down. I wouldn't say the anxiety has gone completely, I can still feel it, but at least I don't feel panicky anymore. I also ravenously starving for the first time in weeks 😄. Thank you for asking xx

Propranolol. Definitely. It's a life saver for physical anxiety symptoms.

Friedseasalt · 24/01/2024 19:27

Great I’m sooo glad you feel a bit better. They do work wonders!
