Claiming UC between jobs (be nice!)

Hi Netters!
The worm is back....
So I left my job last week due to stress. I was working for an agency so was only paid weekly and was also on a PT contract as I had co-decided with my line manager that working full time wasn't in my best interest at the time due to my MH.
I had been signed off with stress for a month back in October and then returned in November- and then re-joined the agency in November (I worked for them last year) because my work didn't have any part time positions available.
Whilst my team did their best to accommodate my mental health needs we both felt like it was in the best interest of my mental health to leave the job after we realised working part time still wasn't working (it was a very intense job). I'm doing an ad hoc shift at the place this week as it's my last official day and I am currently looking for a new job, and have 2 interviews lined up, I'm hoping to start in early-mid January however until then I need some support paying rent (I have no savings and my flatmate is also unemployed but has a guarantor), whilst I realise I quit my job voluntarily and I also have no sick note to say I couldn't do that job due to stress I was wondering whether the DWP would sanction me and whether it's worth me asking for another sick note just to support my reason for leaving? I can provide evidence I'm looking for a job and I'm literally hoping/praying I'll only need to claim for a month or so. Please advise.
A very anxious worm.

It sounds like you're having a hard time. If you think you'll be working by mid January and won't need Universal Credit, then a Universal Credit claim isn't worth doing because it takes 1 month and 1 week before your first payment, although you can get an advance. If you think you will need UC to top you up, then it might be worth it. Unless you have a fit note, you'll have to be actively looking for work.

@Lougle Good point, I have wondered whether it's worth it and I've got the identity appointment today so I'm sure they'll advise me there. I'm actively looking for work so do I still need to show sick note? THANK YOU! :--)

Oh crikey I don’t know the answer sorry but I do think that this is exactly what UC should be for. Helping people having a struggle. Nobody should be unkind to you. Hope you get sorted and have a worry free Christmas.

@BitOutOfPractice aw thank you! I think I've just googled too much into it and now my heads all a jitter! Thank you , have a lovely Christmas too <3

Yes I would claim, it's what it's there for. You'll probably still get a payment whilst working anyway so it's not like you're just claiming for the one month.

You can get an advance so you won't be waiting 5 weeks for first payment.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/12/2023 08:24

Ah, the Google search of doom! Especially ones undertaken in dark hours. I bet they’ll be able to help at the ID meeting! Good luck!

Knackeredhamster · 12/12/2023 08:29

I would see a gp asap and get a fit note.
Explain what you've said here.
It's not 100% you'll get another job not being negative but you're doing the right things, and seeing your GP would be a good thing.

I agree late night googling of a system that's highly irregular will be worse for your well being.

Good luck
