Mirtazapine sedation

Can anyone taking this tell me how the sedative effect works for them. Sleep is my biggest problem and taking 7.5 at bedtime helps me sleep.

I’m hoping this doesn’t wear off. What is your experience please.

I found it helped me sleep for the few years I was on it, although started on 15mg and went up to 60mg x

I'm on 15 - have been for 3 years so far this time round. Insomnia is a definite symptom of my depression, Mirtazipine continues to make a huge difference, bad nights are rare on the medication.

Yes insomnia is the worst part of everything. Thanks for replying.

I only take it now if I've had a few nights of bad sleep in a row. If I take one before bed I can go weeks of good sleep even without taking any more. It breaks some kind of process that makes me wake up and start to worry. Not sure of my dose but I don't take it regularly. My day time anxiety is OK right now so no need

I’m nervous of taking mymirtazapine regularly enough. Nytol is good for me and it has an anti-emetic effect too.

It helped me sleep for years, but my dose was. a lot higher. It caused a lot of weight gain for me, but I'd take the weight gain over the lack of sleep. I went off it to TTC.

I'm on Mirtazapine 45mg and have been for several years (started on 15, then went up to 30 then 45). It definitely helps me sleep (I have chronic insomnia). I also don't feel any ill effects/drowsiness etc the next day, unlike other meds I've taken specifically for sleep eg Zopiclone.

Weirdly, a lower dose of Mirtazapine apparently helps more with sleep than higher. About a year ago I reduced my dose to 15mg after a meds review with my doctor as I felt at that point my mental health was under control and my insomnia was more of an issue affecting me day to day. It didn't work for me (the mental health stuff came back with a BANG haha) but if you can keep the dose low that would probably be best for both your insomnia and your mental health.

I have tried other meds btw, sertraline and another I forget the name of, and Mirtazapine is definitely right for me (may not be for others). Keeps me on a level mentally without turning me into a zombie and helps with sleep. So I'd give it a go. My DH takes Trazadone and that also seems great for him both mental health and sleep-wise.

I’ve also been told about a lower dose being more soporific. My GP keeps wanting to raise it but my body doesn’t really seem to react well to most antidepressants and I’m not keen, but other people will have a really good reaction to them. Honestly, nobody knows why people react so positively to antidepressants and it can’t do harm to try, and Mirtazapine is pretty universally sedative.
