Anxiety. Bastard and crippling anxiety.

I have it severely. Generalised anxiety disorder, OCD , separation anxiety. You name it.

I have had dreadful experiences with mental health support via the Doctor. Traumatic experience and very upsetting.

Doctor was a support but now isn’t .

I really really can’t cope with this anxiety for much more .

Please please can someone help me with strategies, techniques etc … anything that will help to relieve this shit. Three Diazepam in today and it’s done barely anything to ease it.

So sorry you’re going through this, it’s utterly shit.

The things I am doing:

  • exercise
  • deep breathing (with lavender scent)
  • listening to calming music and guided meditations
  • having a shower (try a blast of cold and also as hot as you can stand)
  • watching gardening programmes or other gentle things
  • cleaning/housework
  • pacing around the house (not particularly helpful but needs must sometimes)

I hope things improve for you soon.

It’s very lonely, but you’re not alone, you’re far from the only person dealing with this.

Being kind, patient and compassionate with yourself is important too.

You don’t have to answer here but am wondering if you’re on a longer term medication (anti depressant) and/or have been referred to counselling by you GP.

SmugglersHaunt · 13/11/2023 13:09

I suffer from anxiety as well and can only sympathise. All I know is that it won’t last forever.

Elmeux · 13/11/2023 14:08

OP, that sounds really tough. So just sending a message of support. It's really hard when you feel you have no one and no support. I find grounding techniques effective, but sometimes nothing helps in the dead of night. I also find it useful to write things down, sometimes things don't feel so bad when you say them out loud or when your conscious/rational brain say them. Try and set yourself little goals or small acts of self care, and be kind to yourself if you only manage them partially. X

I’ve just remembered some other things that can help, (if you’re up to it, I know it can be a challenge to find focus or motivation) : things like sewing, knitting, an easy crossword, a jigsaw, crafting activities, doodling, colouring, cutting pictures out of magazines for a scrapbook.

Or even just sorting a pack of cards in to suits/numbers.

Something not to taxing but that occupies the hands.

Thatwasbanging · 14/11/2023 12:06

Thank you for all of your kind replies . It means a lot.

last night was spectacularly difficult and the anxiety was crippling. I was scared I was having some sort of crisis but managed to pull it back.
Recovering from major surgery too so it’s all a bit shit.

Tonight has been absolutely unbearable. I am genuinely not sure how much longer I can do this.
It is not a life it is genuinely torture and I am fucking sick of it. The intrusive thoughts are getting worse and my worry is just growing bigger and bigger and bigger every day. Thank you so much for all of your kind words.

I take daily medication. Use CBT techniques. Get outside in nature each day. Gentle exercise. Distraction (knitting or puzzles or mundane tasks) Mindfulness.

@Thatwasbanging fellow OCD sufferer here. I totally understand the absolute relentlessness of it. I've suffered with OCD since childhood. Started with checking things, like doors were shut etc and over time eventually got to the taboo intrusive thoughts/false memories.
I've started ERP type stuff with a coach the last few weeks.
Today I was thinking am I ever going to have inner peace and clarity ever.
No real advise but you aren't the only one. X

Kielyflower · 15/11/2023 07:28

Can you possibly ask to see a different doctor? @Thatwasbanging You could ask for one that is sympathetic to mental health issues.

Meanwhile keep posting here if it helps. Anything you can do to distract yourself is worth trying.

Someone upthread said it won’t last forever, and they’re right. I am trying to keep that in mind.

I'm sorry that you are going through this. It's just awful. The only things that worked for me were Citalopram, digging my allotment, and walking lots and lots. Basically wearing myself out physically. In the evening it was a Diazepam and gentle TV. No alcohol, sadly. I also watched Buddhism videos (by a specific monk called Ajan Brahm) - helped me to understand that it all would pass.

Laughingallday · 15/11/2023 08:35

I don't have much advice for you, only to say I understand how you feel. I've been feeling very anxious with some panic attacks. I feel like I've been in a state of panic for the last two days. It does become overwhelming and the feeling can become unbearable. This won't last forever. Sending you love and calm x

Hello. I really feel for you—dealing with severe anxiety can feel like a constant uphill battle. Have you got better over the year?

Here are a few strategies that helped me:

I know it sounds basic, but deep breathing really helped when I felt completely overwhelmed. I would do something called "box breathing"—inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 4, exhaling for 4, and then holding again for 4. Just repeating this a few times helped calm my body enough to think a bit clearer.

Sometimes getting all the thoughts out of my head onto paper made a surprising difference. No filter, no structure—just writing out whatever came to mind for 5-10 minutes. It can clear out some of the worry that's cycling through your mind.

When anxiety was at its worst, even basic tasks felt like mountains. Breaking everything down into tiny steps (like even getting dressed, drinking water, or getting some air outside) helped me feel a little more in control and productive. I’d set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and focus on just one small thing.

I found mindfulness to be really grounding, and there are some great apps that can help. Headspace, Calm, or Insight Timer have short, guided sessions that are easy to follow, even when focus is tough. I also found <a class="break-all" href="https://anxietyhelpbox.com/category/adults-free-anxiety-resources-tools/anxietyhelpbox.com/category/adults-free-anxiety-resources-tools/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">AnxietyHelpBox’s free resources had some great mindfulness and relaxation tools that were easy to access.

I know it can feel impossible to even think about moving when you're weighed down with anxiety, but sometimes a bit of gentle stretching or going for a quick walk helped shift the intensity of the feelings. Moving even a little can help release some of that built-up tension.

Finding a small corner or area that felt calming became my go-to for managing the worst days. I’d keep a few comforting items nearby, like a favourite blanket or a soft pillow, where I could focus on grounding myself.

I hope some of these might be helpful for you. I know it can feel like nothing will ever work, but maybe one of these ideas will give you even a little relief. Let me know how you're doing and if any of these have worked for you. Just take it moment by moment—you’re not alone in this.

There’s a link between gut health and anxiety. I didn’t pay much attention until I got a bloated sore stomach for a few weeks and my anxiety went crazy. There’s probably anxiety diets out there. I’ve heard people say for instance that their anxiety reduced on keto
