Treating depression without SSRIs

I’m pretty sure I’ve slipped into depression over the last year. I’ve had a lot to cope with, most recently losing my job and now financial worries.

I cannot have any SSRIs due to previous serotonin syndrome. Talking therapy is ok in the short term but it doesn’t work long term. At the moment I feel either completely numb or in a flat spin of sadness combined with worry.

What are the medical options other than SSRIs?

Sorry to hear you are struggling OP, depression is awful but your aren’t alone and you have plenty of options. Your doctor will be the best person to advise. You can do a bit of research here if you’d like to https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/talking-therapies-medicine-treatments/medicines-and-psychiatry/antidepressants/overview/

I hope things turn brighter for you soon.

There are other types of antidepressants -MAOIs for example. Alternatively, there are other types of therapy, it’s the most effective long-term treatment but sometimes the type of therapy or therapist doesn’t work.

There are plenty of atypical, non SSRI anti-depressants you could try, but your GP might not be comfortable prescribing them without you first being seen by a consultant, so perhaps you need to go to your GP and ask to be referred on.
