2023/24 SAD thread

Hi again, I’m back for another year ☹️. I can’t see that anyone has started a SAD thread yet but today seems to be the day that it’s really kicking in! So here’s another thread to support each other through winter 🥶.

Just to introduce myself, I have regular depression with SAD on top, an eating disorder and ASD (a fun combination).

All are welcome, the only rule is no one is allowed to mention, hygge, snuggling or being cosy!

Wish this god awful cold had happened in the shitty bit of winter

I generally know I'll struggle in December but man, this is very very cold for my part of the country. And I had lots of stuff I wanted to do!

I closed the curtains earlier than needed to keep the heat in!

how's everyone holding up?

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 11/01/2024 21:05

I hate the cold but I do prefer it to the wind and rain. We live by the sea so we get awful storms. I’m so ready for spring though. I’m also constantly hungry this week, don’t know if it’s the cold but it’s annoying!

I don't like the cold but I am slightly better with cold and brightness than all the rain and wind. January is the worst month for me. It feels as if we are stuck in a treadmill of winter

OrangeDino · 12/01/2024 09:43

Really struggling. Still physically unwell (although better than I was) and have fallen apart a bit (well, quite a lot ) over the last few days mood wise.
There's so much I should be doing but I'm so exhausted.

EmmaEmerald · 12/01/2024 11:00

@Idratherbepaddleboarding I got that like with hunger yesterday! Today is less cold, thank goodness.

@lyingonthebeach A lot of people find cold and bright better.

@OrangeDino I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so low. I have revised a lot of ideas of what I "should" be doing but I realise that's not always possible.💐

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 12/01/2024 17:07

Lucky you @EmmaEmerald it’s even colder here 🥶. It is at least light enough for me to take the dog out for a walk in the fields after work if I go straight away rather than a boring, dark walk on the pavements but it’s not very enjoyable!

Apparently tomorrow is back to crazy cold with no end in sight

I'm in that mode where I'm bored and want to do something constructive but too tired. I keep starting little exercise sessions after work, getting five mins warm up in, then going "nah".

lyingonthebeach · 13/01/2024 08:08

@EmmaEmerald I hear you! Tea and left over mince pies and a good book are much more appealing right now. I blame the weather on my sloth-like ways at the mo

EmmaEmerald · 13/01/2024 09:54

@lyingonthebeach sounds like a plan.

The biting cold has definitely arrived this morning! The sky looks like snow, though it's not forecast.

I'm going to do what bits and pieces I can manage this bitterly cold week, but not more. I find the main thing is trying to get the time to go quickly.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 13/01/2024 11:04

I’m feeling thoroughly fed up and grumpy this morning! I’m sick of being cold, sick of being indoors and the extra housework that comes with it, sick of winter clothes and sick of everything. Even the dog keeps nagging me to get back in bed 😂. I’ve had to do my annual mute of our friends who live in Australia on FB as they’re just out there living their best lives and I’m so jealous 😭.

Plodding on here.

EmmaEmerald · 13/01/2024 17:22

@Idratherbepaddleboarding I hear that! If it wasn't for mum, I'd head out for a sunny holiday. Have done three trips to California in winter, so nice.

@MistyTrains2 plodding would be an achievement for me today!

I have done a 20 minute workout after my third coffee of the day.

This usually leads to about an hour of productivity and then I'm done for the day, on cold days. I really would like to be moe constructive but...!

I do really being able to drive in cold weather. I'd have gone to a pub to escape the cold but then you feel it's not worth forking out for cabs and I can't face waiting for the bus to the only pub I can comfortably go to alone.

OrangeDino · 13/01/2024 19:58

Feeling a bit better today. Walked to the shop and it was good to get outside. Still exhausted though.

@EmmaEmerald I wouldn't want to go and get the bus either. Buses are pretty grim in the winter. I'm envious of your winter California trips - sounds a great way to escape the cold and grey. I'm looking at trying to have a couple of days away next month but it will be in the cold and grey of the UK unfortunately!

@Idratherbepaddleboarding I'm sure your Australian friends are really really missing the cold or are looking on Facebook wishing so much that they too could experience the damp grey of a British winter.

Just realised I have used the word grey 3 times in this post! 😫

Keep on plodding on everyone!

EmmaEmerald · 13/01/2024 20:08

@OrangeDino Oh I'm glad you were able to go out.

It was just a couple of weeks but there's so much to see in California
So went back, total three times, but sadly parental health doesn't allow me to travel that far with my sis as there'd be no one to look after mum.

I quite liked the build up to Christmas over there. We got invited to a bank staff Christmas party once! 😂 We didn't go because it seemed bit bonkers and also, fancy going to a Christmas office party when you don't have to....

It was nearly ten years ago, I bet it's way more expensive now.

I get sentimental if I ever watch Private Practice, I think it was called, didn't stick with it, but the clinic is based by the beach in Santa Monica where we stayed. They are often walking our routes. Happy days!

To be honest, I have found this winter much harder than the interim ones. Maybe it depends what's going on in your life. But that said, we're half way through Jan, which is a good start.

MistyTrains2 · 14/01/2024 21:03

Right must get through next week to a better place.

EmmaEmerald · 14/01/2024 23:33

@MistyTrains2 Yes, we gotta do it

I was massively irritable today, it being too cold to spend any decent time outdoors

I probably need to cut back on the coffee but it seems to be the only way I can get anything done.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 15/01/2024 22:31

Apparently today is blue Monday, the day when people feel the most depressed all year. I guess the only way is up!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 16/01/2024 09:59

It’s snowing! 😀❄️☃️ this is big news as we hardly ever get snow where we live. The last time we had even a flake was 2021!

OP posts:
EmmaEmerald · 16/01/2024 11:23

@Idratherbepaddleboarding

Glad you like snow

I'm sitting here praying we don't have it.

Hard to get stuff done today, so cold. Next week looks better.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 16/01/2024 12:04

@EmmaEmerald , it’s such a rare event here it’s very exciting! I’m gutted I’m at work and my friend is taking the dog to play out in it ☹️. It’s turned to rain now where I’m working though but not sure what it’s like at home.

OP posts:
OrangeDino · 16/01/2024 17:10

A tiny bit of snow here. I like snow - if there's enough for everything looking lovely and some sledging. But we only have a sprinkling and it is so very cold I don't want to be outside today.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 17/01/2024 17:02

I’m so cooooold 😭.

OP posts:
lyingonthebeach · 17/01/2024 17:27

Me too! It's seeping into my bones. It's why I am eating sticky toffee pudding with custard. Honest!

At least tomorrow they say sun and that does make a bit of a positive difference to my mood, any hopefully, my diet.

OrangeDino · 17/01/2024 17:51

Oh @lyingonthebeach I really want some sticky toffee pudding and custard now. My sugar and carb cravings are even worse than usual!
I made a massive effort today to go outside. Walked to the shop and slipped over, fell flat on my arse! Ouch!

It was lovely and sunny but so slippy.

EmmaEmerald · 17/01/2024 19:43

@OrangeDino Oh no are you okay?

I popped out at lunchtime because I really needed fresh air. Only walked 20 mins as it was so cold.

But then I got home, had a cup of tea, within half an hour I began to feel...odd. Headachy and achy shoulders. Possibly a total coincidence and I've caught a bug? Or just the cold?

I do seem to be the only person I know who hasn't had a cold or bug yet this winter so maybe I'm coming down with something.
